I'm new to Inkscape. I'm running version .91 on OS X 10.10.5 (Yosemite). I've downloaded a freeware deck of cards, and I'm doing some simple edits on each of the cards. Each card is in a separate SVG file. I find that every few cards, Inkscape crashes. I get a little popup that says something like, "Inkscape has encountered an internal error, and will now close."
At the moment, I am changing the background color of the cards from white to an off-white color. I open the file, select the entire card, click on the paint bucket, and change the fill color. Then I save the file, and click on File...Close. Most of the time this works, but every cards or so, Inkscape crashes, as described above.
I'm starting Inscape from the launchpad. Are there any logs I can look at that might give me an idea of what's happening? (Or more realistically, that I could post to get some help?)
Any advice will be appreciated.

Re: Inkscape Continually Crashing on File Close -- OSX
Hello
- First, I don't have X OS but Ubuntu - Linux
- Could you give a link to the free download of the card deck, in order to test here in my system?. Right now, I have a core i5 3.20ghzx4 and 8gb of ram... even here, when making some editions, Inkscape hangs out...
- More info about OS X bugs:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape?fie ... o_package=
- With all respect, What kind of simple editions do you make? use of blurring filters or other filters, Live Path effects?, vectorization of bitmaps, massive tiling clones, editing of paths of 1000 points, gradients with dozens of stops?... or just changing the fill of an object... sorry to ask in this way, but I want to have more idea of what is going on...
Greetings

P1: That it's not the best way to change the filling colour of an object. It creates a new path object that will be over the original artwork. Please check:

I'm afraid I can't help more.
I'm very curious about that free download card deck. Again, please provide a link

Re: Inkscape Continually Crashing on File Close -- OSX
Unfortunately, I had to download 52 separate files by pointing and clicking. (I decided that would faster than figuring out how to get them with wget.) This link https://openclipart.org/search/?query=playing+cards+white+deck should display the files I downloaded -- the ones that say "White Deck". So far, I have made only two kinds of edits: on the face cards, I have deleted the pictures, and I have changed the fill of some objects. (I've changed the fill of the pips and numbers of the clubs to green and of the diamonds to blue. I'm working my way through changing the background on all the cards to off-white.)

P1: I'm sure you're right, but in this case, it seems to work well enough. I'm not a graphic artist. I looked at the manual, but I can't see what I should do instead.
P2: OS X has a terminal mode, but when I try starting Inkscape from the terminal, I get a whole bunch of error and warning messages, and the program doesn't start.
As to the download link, see my earlier response. I was hoping to make a freeware deck of SVG cards that would be more easily read on on a computer screen by people with poor eyesight. This seems like a good deck to start with, as it has large index pips in the corners. The pictures on the face cards don't appeal to me, though. I'm planning to use a set of freeware face cards from the same site: https://openclipart.org/collection/collection-detail/mariotomo/7277
I had originally hoped to be able to make a public domain SVG deck using elements I could find on the Web, but as I say, I'm not an artist. I have found that if I convert the Guyenne cards to PNG and open them in the GIMP, I can color the various parts of the drawing by filling them with the paint can. Thus, I expect to be able to make a PNG deck which will be adequate for my own use, at least. (I like some complicated two-deck solitaire games, and it can be hard to tell the clubs and spades apart when all you see is a little pip.)
Can you tell me if there's a reasonable way that a non-artist could make a decent-quality SVG deck starting with the white deck and the Guyenne deck?
BTW, here is a full deck using the Guyenne cards. https://openclipart.org/detail/175410/guyenne-classic-card-deck I may try using the colored images from this deck, if I can figure out how. The deck is not suitable for my purposes as it stands.

- When trying to open in terminal, did you try the method in the link provided early? If it's not possible to open Inkscape in terminal, I'll leave that way for now.
- Yes, you can combine drawings from different sources on Inkscape. The main advice is that all of them have to be in SVG format
- For your case, it's better to have each card in different files. Later if you want, you can put all of them in one file, but the file will be big, with many objects, more difficult to edit.
- I think that the deck that you have chosen shouldn't give those problems for editing, since It seems to me it's not complex at all. It has some shapes that have a gradient fill, but they aren't difficult to use.
- Now, I could request you to upload a sample working file that triggers that issue, to see how are you editing the card. Me, or some other user could give a better advice about how to do some things
- As I said before, I'm not using OS X. However, I've seen before problems when installing the last Inkscape on OS X. But I can't say that Your problem is the same. My first advice is try to un-install and reinstall again Inkscape, using the download links and instructions from here:
https://inkscape.org/en/download/. If after reinstalling, the problems remain,... We will see.
- It's not the same to use than use the tool with the similar icon than in other programs (Gimp, Photoshop, etc). I recommend to read again these:
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... troke.html
and also read :
If you have problems:
1.- Post a sample (or samples) of your file please.

3.- If you manage to solve your problem, please post here your solution.

Re: Inkscape Continually Crashing on File Close -- OSX
Thanks everybody.. For those who asked, I've found a public domain deck of SVG cards at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Playing_cards_set_by_Byron_Knoll
