My stuff is getting more complex and i find it challenging to manage my vector objects efficiently.
Im used to working with layers from Gimp, but Inkscape's layer behaviour is not always optimal.
Naturally i also work a lot with groups and nested groups, but entering groups has its problems as well.
I tend to "slip" out of groups and re-entering the group can be tedious.
Also once you are in a group, you are still dealing with single objects that always must be selected with CTRL + A.
Another thing i find very annoying about Inkscape's select tool is that when you are clearly pointing to a specific object, it will select another one near the arrow pointer. It dont know if that is because of a z-order thing or if the select tool is just not very precise.
It works better when you zoom in very closely.
Any tips and tricks for improving my layer/group skills ?

With nested groups I usually use the node tool to select and press Space to change back to object select mode. On 0.91, the interference doesn't really bother me. If you just hit and not hold that key it works.
If you want to select more objects in one go, an idea would be adding them a custom property no other object have and once you picked one of them, run the select same option. Like stroke colour with 0 alpha and whatever other values.
Custom labeling doesn't seem to work for me, you can easily overwrite those by Boolean operations.

Thats a good tip and i do that a lot.
Unfortunately i tend to forget to vary my colors, and then it doesnt work.
Also i like to work with color schemes, and you just cant apply your colors later. Composition doesnt work that way for me.
Maestral recently gave the tip to use the search function (CTRL + F), but i dont understand how to use it.
Re: using layers and groups
There's a way to make the selection more precise. But I can't remember for sure what it is. It think it's Inks Prefs > Input/Output > Input Devices. Then it's Grab Sensitivity and/or Click/drag Threshold.
I know what you mean about selecting the wrong thing. I always want the very tip of the arrow of the mouse pointer to be where the click happens. But it seems to me the "zone" is a little bit behind the tip.

Yeah, thats exactly what im talking about. Its very annoying.
EDIT: i set the grab sensitivity to 1. That seems to do the trick.
