I created a vector design 700 KB, when I went to do Path Union Inkscape slowed to a crawl is this because I don't have enough memory? I have 1 gig and use WinXP.
Second question - when I used the simplify function on the above file my design nearly melted, are there any settings for this function so it doesn't simply to melting point?

1GB of RAM should be fine. I can't explain why it slowed.

Under Inkscape Preferences in the Misc section there is a simplification threshold. Reduce the value to make it less damaging. You can make it extremely low and apply it multiple times.
Re: Slow down and simplify problem
Try "View, display mode, outline". Maybe it helps.

Re: Slow down and simplify problem
700 KB seems like a fair size for a SVG. The biggest thing I ever did was 245 objects (with about 60 clipped items which kind of count as two items) and that is only 648 KB. I put that on 18 layers. I've got 2 Gigs Vista and I have to hide most of the layers to work on it.
Re: Slow down and simplify problem
I heard that Vista requires twice as much memory as XP. I've just checked and the node count on my design it 22213
Thanks everyone for the advice and help I'm off to check out those settings.
WOW what a difference I have changed the peferences for simplify to 0.0003 applied it once and now have a node count of 2748 nodes a heck of a difference and the design doesn't look any different than before I did it.
THANK YOU

Re: Slow down and simplify problem
If you have any Gaussian blurs on the fill turn the filter quality to the lowest Shift Cntl P ---> filters.
Re: Slow down and simplify problem
Fantastically helpful, i also suffer from horrific slowdown on 2gig XP, i blame it all on the amount of nodes and i'm sure this will work wonders for me.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
