Help with Fonts

Postby Wittenbergdoor » Fri Dec 14, 2012 12:33 am

Hi!

I've been designing graphics (flyers, posters, etc.) with Inkscape for about a year and have always used the Helvetica Neue font. As of this morning, however, my Helvetica fonts no longer work in Inkscape, although all my other fonts do. Helvetica does work in other programs, such as MS Word and Gimp. When i try to type using helvetica in Inkscape, It just leaves blank spaces (and yes, I am sure that the color is not set to white). I am running Inkscape version .48 on a Windows 7 Professional 64-bit operating system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having the exact same problem. Thank goodness I'm not the only one! Except it's with about 35% of my fonts.

I updated WIn7 with the patch they sent out on Tuesday. I think this adversely affected how Inkscape displays some (but not all) OpenType fonts. It's incredibly aggravating, but it sounds like it's a Microsoft issue. I'm on the fence as to whether or not to revert the update, but will be complaining to Microsoft right now.

It is indeed a Microsoft issue. So far besides Inkscape, Microsoft, Adobe, and Corel products are also showing the issues too.

Hi,

I am having the same problem here, but with more than half of my fonts. Very recently (like, hours ago it worked fine)

I think the only fonts that display are .ttf. Every .otf font remains in the dropdown menu but when you select one, your text just goes blank.

Do you have any idea why this is happening or how to fix it, workarounds, really anything !

Thanks in advance

Thanks for offering your help. Here is a link to one of my SVG files, which used to be filled with Helvetica text. I think I uploaded it correctly:

Holy crap! :o 5 different people having the same exact problem, all in one day?

ScislaC, though not a frequent poster, is an Inkscape developer, if I'm not mistaken. So this is surely very reliable info!
ScislaC wrote:It is indeed a Microsoft issue. So far besides Inkscape, Microsoft, Adobe, and Corel products are also showing the issues too.

I know I downloaded new Windows Updates either late last night or early today, so I'm guessing most or all of you did as well. But just to cover all the bases, a couple of questions.

1 - Does everyone here use Windows?
2 - Did anyone have this problem before the updates this week?

If "yes" for #1, and "no" for #2, I suspect that MS will be putting out a patch or update or whatever, before too long. If you can't wait for it, as metzgerism suggested, you can uninstall the update. I'm sorry that I can't give instructions for that.

If you're not using Windows, or this problem started before these updates, would you please provide an SVG file for us to look at. Also please let us know your Inkscape version and operating system.

Wittenbergdoor, since you started this topic, I want to make sure that this theory of the Windows Update causing the problem, fits your issues. If it doesn't, can you say how it seems not to fit?

And if I've somehow left anyone out in this sort of group message, please post again, and say why you think your particular problem is not related to the Updates.

And finally, many, many thanks to ScislaC for dropping by! :D

Whew! It's such a relief to find this. Imagine my surprise this morning when every Inkscape file on my computer was missing all text! When Google failed to turn up reports of this happening, I thought I'd finally gone crazy!

I'm on Windows 7, so the Windows update sounds like a likely culprit. Good to know.

I use windows 7 on both desktop and laptop. I do not remember if I updated it but I usualy press turn off button and go away so it is possible win. update was applied. I am looking forward for reply or suggestion what is the best thing to do. Now I am forced to use illustrator which I HATE. :(

I contacted someone from Microsoft customer service, although they were pretty clueless. I ended up just asking for help in isolating the problem from this batch of updates. There's one in particular that deals with a vulnerability in fonts themselves, but I couldn't isolate it from the rest - so I believe this is one of the Office 2010 Security updates (or all of them!).

Nonetheless, I used System Restore to revert everything back 24 hours, and that "fixed" the problem. Unfortunately, the next time I reboot this will probably rear its ugly head again.

Hi,

I am using windows 7 64-bit too, and I did not have any problem with these fonts yesterday. I know there was a windows update not so long ago (these happen often so I don't really remember when was the last one) so that might be it - but not 100% sure. I don't think giving you a svg file would help since every svg file I had was working fine before. Now they just do not display otf fonts...
By the way, I am new to the forum so I don't know how to send you an svg file, but I had been looking at the svg source file before finding this thread and nothing looked wrong for what I could tell...

Hi

Other sites recommend uninstalling update KB-2753842 to fix the font problem affecting all Type-1 fonts.
(Type-1 fonts outlines are based on Bézier curves while Truetype fonts outlines are based on quadratics.)

I guess Microsoft engineers/programmers are working overtime to remedy this error as apparently all users who has enabled automatic updates are affected.
No news from Microsoft though!! (Are we surprised?)

The text in your file rendered properly in Inkscape, on my Linux operating system.

I had the same problem on 64-bit Windows 7. Uninstalling KB-2753842 worked for me.

Thanks a lot for the solution.

Brynn,

Thanks for asking. Yup, it's the Windows update alright. Downloaded it first thing yesterday morning.

Inkspots,

Thanks for checking it. If only I were a Linux user :(

So I guess the next question is how do we undo the update. System restore, anyone?

This probably goes without saying, but if anyone notices when Windows corrects this, can you tell us here on this post?

To uninstall, in Win7 - Start - Control Panel - Programs and Features - View Installed Updates - Double Click on the line containing "KB-2753842"

KB2753842 was released on 20 Dec which should resolve this issue. I installed it today and it works for me.

I'm having a problem with at least one font not showing up in Inkscape 0.48. I don't know if the problem is new because I just reinstalled my OS (Windows 7 64-bit). I uninstalled KB2753842 and rebooted, and the font still doesn't show up. The font contains music symbols and is MAESTRO.TTF. Should I start a new thread? Or, could someone please help me here?

Thanks,
D

The Microsoft issue was with OTF fonts, not TTF, so uninstalling the update would have no effect and the update has been fixed with an update to the update anyway. Inkscape doesn't always work with fonts that seem to work in other apps.
When I use music symbols in Inkscape I paste them in so i can't remember if maestro has ever worked properly...

druben, thanks for the information.

Have you had any luck with the Finale post-script fonts and Inkscape?
