Why will a project not print?

Postby trock » Fri Dec 02, 2011 6:32 am

HI,
I have been trying out inkscape and have a strange problem. The graphic I've been working on just stop printing. Blank paper every time. It has printed before. No error, nothing wrong on the surface.

I start a new file and dropped in a graphic and it prints ok. This is very big bug...Any fix for this?

I even copied the graphic to a new file and still no printing. Just blank paper!

Using current version 4.8.2.

Yes, I'm pretty sure this is a bug. I suspect ~suv will be able to provide a link to it, and possibly more info.

So thanks for posting your Inkscape version. It might be helpful to also post your operating system.

Too few information to guess about what might be going on (infos about drawing content, latest modifications before printing started to fail, OS and printer might give hints, or at least access to the SVG file).

Does the same happen when saving a copy as PostScript (*.ps) or Encapsulated PostScript (*.eps), and viewing the PostScript file?

Can you share the SVG file?

Hi all,
I'm using 4.82 on Win7 64b system. The problem is only internal to inkscape. If I export to a pdf it will print, but not to the exact scale of the actual svg file that I need.
I even tried a copy of the lable and pasted in a new svg file. Still won't print. Some flag, some how must have been set and I see no way to print this.

Hate to say the program is not of much value with this type of bug. Hope this get's pushed to the top of the priority list.
Some reports go back to version 4.6. Wonder if this is a Microsoft problem in Win7?

I opened the svg in gimp and it prints ok but I have to manually size it.
I tried to attached the file, but it's over 256k.

Note:
I started the program up again and tried to print, now it prints, but the top and left side are chopped off...Even after moving to center of page.
Strange... :?
Thanks for the feedback.

I don't have any kind of the technical understanding of Inkscape, and intimate knowledge of bugs as ~suv. But just as an observation, I've only seen this complaint within the last.....I'd say year or so. That doesn't mean it's not a long standing problem, just that I haven't seen it in this forum except for fairly recently.

Hi brynn,
Well the problem is not going away. I guess I'll just have to stick with Corel draw. Inkscape has some really nice features but if basic printing is a problem, I'll wait for the next release.
Thanks for the feed back.

It sounds like ~suv is willing to troubleshoot. She really is an expert with Inkscape and Inkscape bugs. And it sounds like she's not convinced it's a bug. You really can't have anyone better on the case!

But I think she needs the SVG file to examine it.

Hi brynn,
I'm not aware of ~suv. I'm new to the forum so not aware of who's who or what's not..
I can zip the file, but not sure how or if the initial problem will show up again. The current problem is the top and left edges are cut off no matter where it placed.
Keep in mind this file was printing ok to start with.

OOh, forgot a possible cause, I did do an update to the inkcape program version to the current .48.2. Started the file with .48.1.
This may be the cause.

Here is the file though.
Thanks

I did a little more testing.
I placed a block and a line on the outside top left and lower left. I wanted to see what was moving. everything is on the same layer.

The lines moved up and left, blocks moved down and right.....Very repeatable, unpredictable results.

This is just not working. Very strange bug. Yes, bug.

What happens when you save as a pdf file and print through your pdf viewer?

Your SVG file has a group of 16 objects so far outside the drawing area that Inkscape fails to even render the group or any visible objects inside it.

a) Could you test printing the attached modified version with said group removed?

b) Also, did you test printing without using a pattern fill for the 'Serial I/O' symbol, but drawing/using the path itself (AFAICT there is nothing gained by resorting to a pattern fill here, but I could be wrong)? There could be issues with pattern fills (when printing or converting to PostScript).

<technical info without practical value for the end user - feel free to ignore ;) >
  • One major change between the two Windows builds is the version of the Gtk+ stack which also provides the printing dialog: Inkscape 0.48.1-2 used Gtk+ 2.16.6, Inkscape 0.48.2-1 uses Gtk+ 2.22.1.
  • Another change is the version of the cairo library used in Inkscape to convert SVG to PostScript (PS/EPS) and PDF, and - AFAIU - also for printing (which is usually based on the PostScript format): Inkscape 0.48.1-2 shipped with cairo 1.8.8, Inkscape 0.48.2-1 with cairo 1.10.2.
</technical info>

Off topic:
brynn wrote:It sounds like ~suv is willing to troubleshoot. She really is an expert with Inkscape and Inkscape bugs.

Unfortunately, printing issues with the Windows port of Inkscape are outside of what I'm familiar with or able to advise for (both because I don't have access to Windows and to Inkscape running on Windows, and because I only have a cheap B&W laser printer available for testing here, which I rarely use, in general, and for printing directly from Inkscape (if important, I'd probably rely on printing a copy saved as PDF file).

There are far too many variables in play when printing directly (platform-specific, printer-specific, PostScript related, and Inkscape bugs as well). And too few (if any) active developers familiar with the printing process directly out of the Windows port of Inkscape using the built-in print dialog, and with driver-specific issues depending on the printer model/manufacturer. Best advice for now (if printing fails or produces unexpected results) seems to save a copy as PDF (the PDF file format (v1.4) supports more features used in SVG than PostScript does), and printing the PDF using e.g. Adobe Reader

~suv is the 2nd person who replied to your topic. And I see she has now downloaded your file, and has some new info for you :D

The original problem was that you could print one document, but no others. If I recall, you have 2 topics about printing - one where you can only print one doc at a time, and the other is the cutoff edge. Perhaps ~suv is onto the issue causing both problems (some objects that are so far off the canvas, that they aren't even rendered)???

Nice "technical info" tags, ~suv :D
I didn't mean to oversell your abilities. But I will try to keep your comments about printing in mind, for the next time :D
