svg to eps and blur effects

Postby astutobob80 » Thu Aug 02, 2012 7:37 am

Hi guys,
I'm struggling with this issues since about a week. I cannot convert my works into high quality eps file.
During my try and error tests I've seen that the resterized effect don't give me a good result (squared curves even without a deep zoom) and without resterizing the blur effect is not rendered.
I've tried many workarounds but none of them worked.
How did you solve (if you solved ;) ) this problem?

Hi

AFAIK eps doesn't support "vector" blur so if you want to have it, you neeed to go to raster.
Can you post a sample of "squared curves" so that we can see if/why rasterization goes wrong

Here it is :-)
This is a simple test with a raster of 1000 dpi. I open it with gsview and the result (on my opinion) is horrible!!!
What do you think?

Welcome to the forum :D

I don't know the answer to your questions, but someone should be along within a day or 2. Hopefully v1nce will be able to check it out.

Well, I'm certainly not an expert on this as I'm having the same issues. Basically, there isn't a way to blur an object without it becoming rasterized. If you are selling your works (esp on microstock as many of us do), you simply can't use the blur feature, sorry to say, no great workaround). however, you can interpolate the object(s) so they appear to be a bit blurry or mimic a gradient. I'm trying to use this method but it takes a lot of time and not necessarily the outcome that I really want.
tip on interpolating: first get the shape you want (use path difference or whatever, but, it must be a path), then, you can use several colors to get the end result, I find 3 - 4 colors work the best. Color each of the 4 shapes a different shade, then group them together, then apply the interpolation effect. Play with the colors until you get the blur effect you are looking for.

As for making an EPS, right now I usually export from Inkscape as a png to GIMP, then save as EPS (that method gets old fast though).
I know that Inkscape can save as an EPS, it says PS 2, but I'm not sure which EPS version that is, does anyone know? Somehow I think my first method gets a better output.

good luck. if anyone has a better method, I'd love to know.
dee

Thank very much flamingolady!
I din't know this effect but I've studied it and I'm gonna try to use it immediately.
Anyway I hope the export of EPS in inkscape will be improved in some next release because it's a pity that a so nice sw has this little limit.

I keep this quote for the others... who knows if someone has a new tip... :-)

I`ll second flamingolady, since you might consider .eps like plain text while .svg or .ai could be treated as rich text format. Just an illustrative comparison. It usually goes even for the occasions when .eps is asked/wanted - meaning that basic line drawing is necessary for the further usage of it.

Perhaps halftone could be an alternative? It mostly depend of what you need or want to depict.
