A camp and a warming fire
Re: A camp and a warming fire
Oh wow, nice, nils!
My only comment would be about the fire. And which I know that depicting fire with any computer graphics program, is a challenge which hasn't been solved (at least not to my knowledge or satisfaction)(not in a photorealistic way) (raster or vector). I would just suggest injecting some randomness where possible -- like in the flames themselves, as well as to the cast highlights and glow. There's a part of the glow that reminds me of a gumdrop . And I think that just like highlights are cast onto the campers, some features of the ground would also be illuminated. Also I'm wondering if on the ground, the glow would be a longer gradient?
Just a couple of thoughts. You know, your drawings always inspire me

Re: A camp and a warming fire
Thanks Brynn.
Yes the fire needs work. The illumination of the ground is the hardest part, because it needs random bumps and shadows "int he right direction". So I am saving that part for last. The tent needs some folds (and highlights and shadows) as well.

Re: A camp and a warming fire
Nice effect.
A comment would be, should the color of the fire being so yellow and white?
Although a fire can look so many ways depending on many many factors involved.
If I were attempting this I would consider for more orange and reds with perhaps the bright colors at the flame tips just as a test.
But then I would have to ponder, do I want to draw flames and smoke and all that or would a fire of just glowing coals be better?
Depends on the goal...
The sky and trees and silhouettes create a great effect.
I am not sure how you drew this, but another suggestion is to put the tent, fire, and people each on its own layer.
You can then slide the transparency slider to "dial in" how bright they each should be to hit the exact mood you are trying to effect.
For me that is easier than changing the colors - even if in the end that is what I finally do.

Forgive the typos...

Re: A camp and a warming fire
cool drawing. it takes you into the atmosphere of the scene.
fire (and lava) can be done and is done in movies using some fancy fractals. don't know which type. maybe even the basic tree shape by l-system would do?

Re: A camp and a warming fire
Yeah the fire looks like an explosion to me.. but overall this is really good.
Re: A camp and a warming fire
btw i've looked it up..not that i'm any the wiser doing it in inkscape...but fractal fire and lava etc are done with "fractal noise" for anyone that may be curious.
Having a look at the picture again...maybe the characters being lit up by the light of the fire would look even better with more blur?
it's still a really cool scene.

Re: A camp and a warming fire
Thanks all for the feedback, I should really finish this one off. Yes, the fire needs lots of work, but I wanted to get the main things done first, work on details later. (Guess it is MUCH later, haha.)

Awwwweeee! I just lubs this. So cuteee. You ARE talented to make a glowing fire. This kind of thing is going to take me a while to learn how to do. Thank gosh for FREEware, and not have to shell out big money for adobe stuff.
Re: A camp and a warming fire
Thanks for your feedback - I appreciate all suggestions! The pic's a WIP so naturally it's a tad rough around the edges. I really should take the time and work on this piece, it's a waste to have half-finished artwork... Ah well maybe after my star map is done.

looks like I should finish and upload my fire filter.
Would anybody agree to wait 30 seconds more to get a (somewhat) realistic fire effect ?
Image doesn't work ?

Re: A camp and a warming fire
More filters and plugins etc are always a good thing... but I'd probably want to actually draw a fire, not have one generated for me

Re: A camp and a warming fire
I actually like the randomness of the stars on the night sky against the placement of aliens around a yellow space ship on the ground. Oh wait, it was a camp with fire I see now. Definitely need some sparkles out of the burning firewood, or some rising dark smoke if the fire was fueled with gasoline...
Well done you took my imagination to the outer space

Oh, I'm so glad you've done some more with this. I like the changes -- especially how the embers float up and look like stars! It's a very dreamy kind of image, to me

Re: A camp and a warming fire
the fire has improved dramatically. Would it look even more convincing if there was some orange/red in the fire?
Re: A camp and a warming fire
Mh, I tried working on this and Inkscape died a horrible death because of all the blur I swear it'll be another year before I will get this updated.

looking like dreamy.

Thanks johntaylor. Can't believe it's 3.5 years since I touched this... haha, I guess this will remain, forever, a WIP.
