Please fix memory leak!
Please fix memory leak!
Please fix the memory leak issue. Seriously, it is just not OK for a program to take 2-3 minutes just to select a node. It USED to only happen when I didn't have view > No filters enabled. Now it's just getting worse and worse and even without filters activated, there are massive memory leaks still happening. I know you guys are already working to fix this, but I just wanted to add to the sense of urgency, since being able to do something like select anode or select an object is kind of critical to literally any project.
Re: Please fix memory leak!
got a sample file? Mine doesn't seem to do that, not yet any way.
OS? version? hardware?

I agree with PatJr: It would be good if you supplied us with a few of your system details.
A memory leak in Linux would be different from where it leaks in MacOS or Windows. Are you running XP? Vista? Win7?
Is your O/S install recent? Or is it a copy of Windows that in and of itself is aging and could stand to be re-installed? I find that 1 year can be hard on a Windows box.
What release of Inkscape are you using? The latest?
Point: I don't experience a memory leak in Ubuntu 10 10. I don't experience it in Windows XP SP3. I would be inclined to believe your system may be at fault here.
But I'd need a lot more technical information.

Re: Please fix memory leak!
If your system hasn't more then 2 gb ram, not even fixing "memory leaks" will help.
If it's a large image (many nodes, and/or gradients, filters, including blurs) you could try using layers, and turning off the visibility of those you don't need at the moment. Plus as you mentioned, work in No Filters mode. Would working in Outline mode help? Also work at the lowest zoom possible.
Also, most of our members are not developers. To convey urgency to developers, you should use either Launchpad, Inkscape's bug tracker (https://launchpad.net/inkscape) or the developers' mailing list (http://inkscape.org/mailing_lists.php?lang=en). But maybe by posting here, you'll receive a tip that will help

Re: Please fix memory leak!
brynn? I have a feeling there's something seriously wrong with his operating system. If it takes between 120 and 180 seconds to actually capture a node while all the graphic effects are turned off, something somewhere's going very wrong.
It is possible his graphic is using an incredible number of nodes too. Perhaps he has placed too much of a burden on one layer for any copy of Inkscape to run properly.
PatJr did request a copy of the SVG so we could examine it. However, your advice to have him submit bug reports at the proper source was what I should have added to my post. Great teamwork!

Great teamwork!
It's a great forum! More often than not, a complex question is answered in bits and pieces by several members. It's something I've rarely experienced in a forum. Usually my experience is that one member will give a bland response, that still requires more research on my part. But not here. Everyone wants to help, and wants to make sure all the info is available to solve a problem!
