Internal error when importing an image
Internal error when importing an image
Hi,
I have a crash in Inkscape when I try to import a specific .jpg image
There is a popup message with internal error then Inkscape closes.
This image is only 516 Kb. Each time I try to import (incorporate or link) Inkscape closes with error.
I have no problem to import a 7500Kb image.
I saw many items in the forum about import errors but did not find any solution.
I use Inkscape 0.92 64bits with Windows 10 64bits
Does somebody can tell me how to import this image? What is wrong with this image?
Here is a link to the image : https://my.pcloud.com/publink/show?code ... 9uSh14OvsX
Thank you for your help.

Re: Internal error when importing an image
Welcome aboard!
Couldn't reproduce the issue with Inkscape 0.92.1 r15371 on win 10 64bit.
Maybe there has been a related bug fix in between the two builds?
If nothing works I'd try saving the original raster image in png format.

Re: Internal error when importing an image
Thank you for your quick answer.
In fact i use same version: Inkscape 0.92.1 r15371
Sorry I did not noticed the build number.

Re: Internal error when importing an image
It could help to have the file where you're trying to import the image into to see if we can reproduce the crash.
(e.g. in 0.91, there was an error where Inkscape crashed when you already had imported an image of a different file format, so file contents may be relevant).

Re: Internal error when importing an image
In fact I uploaded the image file to the cloud to share it with you. (see the link in my first post).
Now I downloaded the same image file from the cloud and used the image file from download folder to import it in Inkscape and... it works!
If I copy that downloaded image file to another folder and then try to import it ... Inkscape fails to import again and closes!
Difficult to understand why...

Re: Internal error when importing an image
I was referring to the SVG file where you import the jpg file into, not to the jpg file.
But it now seems the issue is a different one.
Can you tell us the path to the file where it doesn't work vs. the one where it does work?

Re: Internal error when importing an image
When reading the original message, I was wondering, if you were importing the 516 kb image into a file which already has a lot of content, it might be just too much for one file.
Are you able to import into a new blank file?

Re: Internal error when importing an image
I was unable to import this 516 kb file into a SVG file with already a lot of content.
Also I was unable to import this 516 kb file into a blank file.
Then I uploaded the 516kb file to the cloud to share it with you.
I downloaded it from the cloud and I succeeded to import that file!
I am still unable to import the original file.

Same error happens to me, I just installed the app and when I import the image file the Message pops up "Inkscape encountered an internal error and will close now." every image I selected same error message shows.

Re: Internal error when importing an image
Could an active moderator please split this into a new topic? This last message may or may not be the same problem as the op. Thanks.
ramin110, please tell us how much RAM on your computer. Also please tell us how large the SVG file is, and also how large the file you're trying to import. What is the format that you're trying to import? Is it a raster image, such as PNG or JPG?
Or if you could share the SVG file and the raster file that you want to import. Then we could find out ourselves.
We often see that error message when we're working with files that are too large for Inkscape to handle, based on your system resources. There could be other reasons too. But that's the first one we want to rule out, before moving on to other possible reasons.

Re: Internal error when importing an image
I am new in inkscape and just learning with Lynda - Inkscape Essential Training video series and using course example files.
Just open new svg file and import example file and got above error message.
8 GB of ram and import normal jpg file with size of 22 kb.

Re: Internal error when importing an image
A link to where we can download the files please?
Since the files are made for a study course, they probably are not too large. But we still need to see the SVG file, to have a chance to find the problem.
Edit
Actually it might not be enough to give us a link, because someone else had showed me that study course recently. I was not able to even see it, unless I sign up for the free trial.
So if you would please save the SVG and JPG files to your computer (if you haven't already - otherwise, I don't know how you could import the JPG), and then upload them here (or somewhere, and give us the link).

Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Re: Internal error when importing an image
I'm not having any problems either. But I do have one suggestion. It's a long shot, so cross fingers.
In the screenshot where you're showing how you choose the image from your file manager, I notice that you have that JPG in a folder called Links. In Windows, often we don't have any trouble putting files wherever we want. But the folders really do have certain attributes, which make them better places to hold certain things. And sometimes it does matter.
Since Links is meant to hold shortcuts, perhaps it's somehow affected the image by saving it there, so that inkscape doesn't recognize it. Or maybe Inkscape isn't allowed to import images from that folder? Here's what I would suggest.
Download the image again, and this time, save it in Pictures or My Pictures. I honestly don't know what the difference is, between Pictures and My Pictures. They look like the same thing to me. But either one will be better than Links.
Don't just move the image from Links to Pictures, but download it again fresh.
