[solved] Best practice with layers

Postby zilli » Mon May 26, 2008 12:00 pm

Hi ...

I would like some tips about layers.. My major doubt is when use layers ?
Example: I will build a website layout... for a website layout... where can I use layers ?? Is necessary ? How layers can make my layout easier for me work on it ?

Thanks!

For a website layout I would use layers to keep website objects seperate. For example I might create the following layers
  • Header
    • Logo
    • Search field
  • Navigation
  • Body
  • Footer
Just think about which sections you might like to temporarily hide, or move around on the canvas, and give each of those sections its own layer.

so.. layers is all about management ....
I saw a lot tutorials .. but all of them just explain how to make or delete a layer.. but.. for the beginners ... question with "why" is more important.. with your explanation ... now I can really understand layers.

thanks microUgly for the example.

That's right. Any drawing you can create with layers can be created without layers. But without layers things can become very difficult to manage.

Imagine that you created a portrait...Very nice and complicated....With shadows...In one layer. And now try to change the hair . Without layer it's just painful. But if you created a layer named "Hair" it's much easier, since you can work only with hair and not with all image (just make other layers unvisible) , which is time consuming and pretty slows the computer.
Hope this helps.

So... just for me close my circle here.
Is normal when you make a website layout you create a new layer to "slice" your layout. But if I have all my work done with layers.... create a new one just to slice is not necessary, right ? Cause example... If I wanna slice/export the logo image... I can just make all the other invisible and select my logo and export as bitmap... Am I doing right here ?

Bests!

Just remember layers are there purely to make your life easier. I mean, I start every project off with 3 - One for what I consider the background, a middle one where I keep the majority of stuff so I can z-order it freely, and then a top layer where I keep text. The locking feature of layers is really nifty in Inkscape; especially for what you'll be doing, which will likely involve background images.

Simply lock whatever layers have those and voila, you don't have to worry about accidentally selecting them while still being able to see them! Which is a huge help for people like me, who are so prone to finger spasms when objects are close together  particularly when it comes to text since it's easy to accidentally click between letters if you're not paying attention.
