Development versions for Windows available on a regular basis via AppVeyor

Postby Moini » Thu Sep 14, 2017 6:17 am

Development versions of Inkscape for Windows (currently for 0.92.x branch and for master branch (formerly called 'trunk') ) are now automatically created on every change to the code base.
They can be found at

https://ci.appveyor.com/project/inkscap ... pe/history

Click on the title of the build you want to test (i.e. a URL that goes like https://ci.appveyor.com/project/inkscap ... ape/build/<branch_name>-<commit_number>).

On the next page, below 'Job Name', select if you want the 32 or 64 bit version (Environment: MSYSTEM=MINGW32 or Environment: MSYSTEM=MINGW64).

On the next page, click on 'Artifacts' (at the right, right above the terminal-like box).

On the next page, download a 7z file.

Hey stranger! I keep trying to catch your attention, but you seem to post, and then disappear again. This time, you would seem to be coming back for the answer! (Flamingolady has been asking about you, but she's not here daily either.)

As always the stable versions of Inkscape are available on the website. My guess is that there won't be any executables for the development versions. Maybe someone is making them for Windows now and then (they were, not too long ago, I know that). But it's doubtful someone will make installation packages available on a daily basis.

Edit
"master branch"?? No more trunks?? Yikes, the tree is going to fall over! Maybe the structure has become more like a vine than a tree, now?

Sorry, ragstian, forgot to add that info. Edited original post!

The analogy with the vine isn't very far from reality, Brynn :) git is a bit less 'ordered', more 'interwoven' than bazaar was.
Indeed, there are now regular, automated development builds for Windows, for both branches that are currently being supported - it's what this post is about :)

So how do you get the most current version? Do you just choose the one with the highest number in the right column? Because "CI/AppVeyor: Enable tests" doesn't tell me much. Several of the others seem to name the bug which was fixed. But most of the time when we would send a user here, it would be to get the most current one.

Will there be any way of knowing which one is the most stable? I know that none are meant to be considered as stable. But it seems like in the past, when we would get a dev version, it would be one which we could keep for awhile. This seems to make it less friendly for ordinary users, and more need for a connection to developers (to know which would be the most dependable, or sometimes even to know which one we want).

I personally would consider anything in the 0.92.x branch even better than the released version, because commits to that branch are limited to bug fixes and minor improvements that won't be as disruptive in nature as new features introduced to the master branch. Of course they can still break things - use at your own risk. It's also more difficult to help users struggling with bugs that have been fixed already in the version one is using.

In the master branch, generally you can't expect stability. Some things may be better, others are worse. It's not recommended for production, and those who do use it for production should know how to deal with occurring issues.

The tests (AppVeyor is a build-test website) are ordered by time, newest first.

I wonder if it would be worthwhile to post this notice on the inkscape devel/user mailing list. I don't normally visit InkscapeForum so I was not aware of these builds, found out about them by accident through a bug report by Eduard:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bu ... comments/2

thanks for the heads up,
Alvin

Of course, go ahead, Alvin! (I found out about it via Eduard, too :) )

Additionally:
For Ubuntu, there's
https://launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/+ar ... untu/trunk (0.93 devel series)
and
https://launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/+ar ... able-daily (0.92.x series)
