Installing Inkscape on Windows without installing GTK+

Postby Ambassador » Tue May 11, 2010 7:52 am

Hello. I have already installed the GTK+ Framework/Runtime for Windows. Despite this, the Inkscape Win32 Installer does not recognize this and tries to install the GTK+ Framework again in a different directory. Is there some way I can bypass the Windows Inkscape Installer's mandatory installation of GTK+ without resorting to a manual install via the Inkscape 7-zip download?

I don't know if there's a way to do this, but if there is, I'm sure someone else will reply. But my thought is, why not just let it install, then delete your original one?

I require a global GTK+ Framework install for other applications such as Pidgin. Is the Inkscape GTK+ install made available to all other applications that require it?

Oh, ok, I see what you mean.
I looked in my Program Files, and found GTK+2 Runtime in an entirely separate place than Inkscape. However, like you, I think I have another program or 2 that also use the GTK. I remember when installing Inkscape, I just clicked through the prompts, some of which were to install GTK, and let it proceed according to defaults.

But the other programs I have that use it, I remember having to install it separately, then in the program options or preferences or whatever for one of them, having to specify the path to GTK. I think another program just found it automatically.

So I looked in the Inkscape directory, and see some of the very same files that I see in the GTK directory. So I'm guessing, repeat guessing, that Inkscape installed the GTK sort of already incorporated into Inkscape. Maybe Inkscape only needs certain parts(files) or a particular build or something?

The GTK+2 Runtime, by itself is 15.6 MB, so I suppose having 2 of them could be a space issue....but that's as far as my knowledge and educated guessing ability go. I guess I'm content with whatever I have.

But I'm sure someone with the proper knowledge will come along and educate us all :D

I wouldn't have think so. After all, GNU/Linux has one global GTK+ installation for every program, so I don't see why it should be different in Windows (unless something is different in the method of compiling perhaps).

I did read that you can install Inkscape manually (via the 7zip) archive without installing the including GTK+ Framework, but I would like to have a clean install that can be easily uninstalled.

There has to be an installer switch or something. :S

My thought would be the other way: let it install, and delete the GTK dlls from Inkscape directory.

I'd expect you'd have the correct paths set up so all programs (including Inkscape) will find GTK, an expect Inkscape to just rely on the simpler method of bunging everything in one directory without modifying paths. But that's what I'd expect, without actually knowing.

Ok, I managed to install Inkscape without the GTK+ Framework using a command line switch ("/GTK=OFF"), and GTK+ did not install. However, Inkscape gives me an error about a missing GTK dll. How do I set Inkscape to use the right GTK location?
