unraveled spirogram

Postby brynn » Sat Oct 04, 2008 3:18 pm

Hi Friends,
This was inspired by and made with the Spirograph Effect. It still needs to be polished a bit. For example, the curly stroke tail bugs me as it's not entirely smooth. Plus I want to add some shading and maybe highlights.

I also have some other versions in mind, where I use shading, etc. to make it look like a coiled tube, and a rope. I guess it's a little like a rope now, but we'll see what I can do.

Oo, yikes, a little bigger then I thought :o
Comments welcome :D

Interesting.

I've not played around a lot with these effects, mostly because the gui's are unintuitive and I couldn't be bothered to read up on them yet.... maybe I should.

Yeah, those spirograph effect settings (that's what you mean by the gui, right?) are somewhat technical. I think they could definitely be improved with different terminology. But if you've ever played with the real spirograph toy, the "gear radius", etc. makes some sense. (I'm not sure if the toy is still made, so I may be showing my age  ) I would estimate 90% of my work with this effect are trial and error. I'm starting to see some mathematical realationships, but for the most part, it's over my head. I just like it so much, though, that I don't mind the bother of trial and error!

I actually did have a spirograph as a kid. Funny, I had almost forgotten about it. I am getting old.

And, microUgly, the next two lines are: "I will." - "No you won't." The Episode is the one where they shoot the Radioactive Man movie in Springfield.

Luckily, I do not remember the exact title (I think it was simply "Radioactive Man") nor episode number (fairly sure it was early season 8). I guess I do not have to worry about being an obsessive geek.

Ok, are you saying you think I'm in a gang? :P
I guess you have to be a Simpson's fan to get it, huh?

Well, I think I've finished this version of this project. I'm still planning to make certain changes, and give it the look of a coiled tube, and maybe rope. But this is the polished, finished piece for this part. Using a thumbnail, because it got even bigger. Comments still welcome.
