[solved] How do I increase my workspace (reduce icons)?

Postby zaca98 » Sat Jun 14, 2008 11:28 pm

I'm using inkscape in a laptop with 1280x800 resolution. It works fine,
but the icons are large, so that I they take too much of my workspace.
It is usable, but would be nicer otherwise.

Is there any way to reduce the icon size in the menus, like in OOffice?

Thanks,
Leandro.

File->Inkscape Preferences->Misc...
☑ Make the commands toolbar icons smaller
☑ Make the main toolbar icons smaller

The effect (if any) depends on the used GTK theme.

I recommend to disable the rulers (Ctrl+R) whenever you don't need them and the scrollbars (Ctrl+B) in general. Navigating with a 3 button+wheel mouse is faster anyways. Get also rid of the palette if you can.

Edit: You can use the swatches window instead of the palette.

I will try this with Inkscape running on an Asus eee with 800x460 pixels, although I suspect even
more fixes are required before it is really useful. The toolbars and other things use up about half the
available screen space. :| If there is no fullscreen toggle hotkey, like F11 in many web browsers, it would be great if one could be added for future versions.

Removing the rulers is a good thing for me. The swatches window is not quite satisfactory,
the pallete is horiontal, so only a few colors appear (too much scrolling needed).

There was no effect on the size of the icons using the other options...

Thanks for the help,
Leandro.

F11 should already work. If it doesn't, it may be because the toolbox is too tall, in which case you will need to turn it off (and memorize the shortcuts).

As aho said, it depends on the theme you're using. But in recent development versions of Inkscape the options are different, and you should be able to get smaller icons by using the "Small" settings.

Ok, good, I will wait for the next stable version and then I will try it. Thanks.

I tried F11. It removed the window title and made the window cover the entire screen, but it didn't remove everything except the document (buttons, toolbars, menu, etc) like web browsers do. That would be a really useful thing to have even on a big screen imho.

Once you're in full-screen mode, you can remove almost everything manually (View -> Show/Hide). You only need to do this once, as Inkscape remembers the settings (and these settings don't affect normal mode).

Note that you'll need to restart Inkscape to see the change (at least I did when I changed these options).
