Need help with gradients

Postby Henry432 » Tue May 13, 2014 7:57 am

I am almost finished recreating this logo:

Code: Select all

http://i1.cpcache.com/product_zoom/297245124/spider_loc_white_tshirt.jpg?color=White&height=460&width=460&padToSquare=true

The only thing I need to finish doing now is the gradient at the top and the gradient at the bottom. I just have no idea how in the world to do that. Can some genius help me please?

Oh my, that looks bad.

Anyway, open the fill and stroke panel (Shift+Ctrl+F),
set fill to be a gradient,
use the node editor tool -press Ctrl too- to set the gradient in a vertical direction,
click on the edit gradient option in the panel, and raise alpha values to 255,
then with the node editor tool select the step handles displayed on screen one at a time, and
press D for the dropper tool.
Pick colours -black and blue for the lettering- and modify positions if necessary.

The top gradient has at least 3 steps, so you would need to add one new step to that gradient in the gradient editor panel.

There are small gaps between the fill and the outline in the reference image, too small details to get them right.
Maybe it wasn't intentional at all -based on the overall look.

Hi.

This opening comment is not very encouraging or polite in my view.
The logo might not win an award but it's not "bad".

Might be smart to think about how this message is perceived by the OP (Original Poster)
who might have been working on this for a long time.

First, I'm not a logo expert. So my comments are just coming from my own sense of size, color and balance. Is this to go on a t-shirt or other clothing?

Is there a purpose for the blur? It's very slight, but it's there. If there's a purpose for it, it's not coming through to me. Have you tried without a blur?
Nevermind. For some reason, the image opened at 188% zoom of my browser, which made it look blurred. Odd that it doesn't look pixelated! But there still seems to be some sort of glowing effect around the letters. I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe it's an optical illusion from the contrast?

There may be a bit too much contrast in the gradient on the letters. Try making the top end of the gradient not so dark. (Or make the botton end darker.)

I would try filling the inner black outline with a light blue or blue-gray, (behind the letters) and the space between the inner outline and outer outline with white. I don't know if that would work or not, since I don't have an SVG file to work with. I'm thinking of an effect that makes the inner outline and all its contents sort of stand out from the outer outline.

Anyway, just a couple of thoughts :D

I know it was unpolite, still it is better to have it straight than to have no clients for the same reason.
I apologize, didn't mean to be offending.

Yes, logos can be bad.
There are plenty of pages you can find having a collection of logos and elements you should avoid to suceed.
Some of them are presented here:

I'd start here:

Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

I finally finished it guys. I figured out that inkscape can't do two gradients in one object. Like one on top and one in the bottom in my case. So what I did was duplicate the two borders and added a gradient separately to both. One gradient on the bottom of the original border and the duplicated one I did the top gradient. After I did the gradients I differenced them and on the duplicate layer I removed the stroke and tada I have two separate gradients! :)

I hope in the next update inkscape can support two gradients in one object without having to duplicate.

How to put it the polite way.

The file I mailed you back had an attached svg with the exact gradient you wanted to reproduce.
Did it not work?

You can definitely make gradients with more than two steps.
{[(On a side note, for a logo, they are better be avoided for numerous reasons.)]}

Inkscape is based on the svg specification as much as possible.
Fills are described as attributes for objects, and, as far as svg goes you cannot add more than one fill attribute to the exact same object.
It's nothing to do with inkscape, it is somewhere the very basic of the idea behind svg.
(You can add a fill to an object, group it, and add another fill attribute to the group, but the two at a time won't get rendered.)

In case of adding a fill made with several object (grouped together), a better way would be to use clipping instead.

Don't worry I figured it out. The file you sent me wasn't really exact to the original image but I got it close enough myself. Thanks for helping out though.
