Keep text color for Object to Path

Postby tvoor » Fri Dec 14, 2012 8:28 pm

For web-safe .svg files, I need to convert text to a path. Unfortunately, Inkscape looses the text color and then makes all text black :(

Is it a bug? Work-around ?
(Inkscape 0.48.3.1, Ubuntu)

Are you converting via command line, or some way without using the canvas interface? If you're on the canvas interface, you could just change the color back.

Actually I don't remember seeing this Object to Path issue. Let me do some testing....although I may not be able to, what with the Windows font issues this week. But we'll see. I'll post again later.

Edit
Ok, well that went quickly and without problems. I don't have that issue (Windows 7, Inkscape 0.48.1) on the canvas interface. So I'm guessing, again, that you must be doing it without the interface, perhaps using command line. So someone else will have to test, and help you solve this problem. It shouldn't be too long before someone comes along who can help :D

I am using the Canvas. Try this: create a piece of text, make it red, select it, convert this Object to Path... and ... text is black !

Oh gosh, I can't think of anything that could be causing this -- thinking of missed keystrokes, or extra keystrokes, if using key shortcuts, thinking of missed menu items, thinking you might have more than just the text selected, and a few other things. But nothing really makes sense.

I'm stumped -- if PT's suggestion doesn't help....well, there's always looking at the SVG file, I guess. Just put some text in a file with nothing else, and upload, either as attachment to reply, or wherever you choose, and give us the link. Then we could investigate the real thing.

But I've got my fingers crossed for the resetting of the Prefs file. :D

It could be that your text, once converted to a path object, has a very thick, black stroke that is hiding the fill colour. Try setting the stroke to have no colour, or making it much thinner.

Oh yes, good point Inkspots! Go to Fill and Stroke dialog > Stroke Style tab, and check the width of the stroke. Although in all my tests, the text had no stroke to begin with, and after Object to Path, did not give it a stroke. But in certain situations, that has happened to me. So maybe that's it?

Just so you don't think tvoor is having an odd problem, I have this problem whenever I use more than one font color in a text and then do object to path (for wikipedia). The first font color will be okay, but the second will go to black. I have to select each individual path separate and change its color. Windows 7, Inkscape 0.48.4 r9939. I tried all the above solutions and nothing worked. P.S. Am very happy with inkscape in general. So much easier (and cheaper :D ) to use than Corel.
