I know inkscape is slow but...
it get's really slow when zooming in and filter effects are shown(it's fast when I disable them). I have not even 100 nodes in my image and it is already unusable.. I don't believe that it's the fault of my system as it has 4GB RAM(or what 32-Bit Windows leaves from that), 4*2,5Ghz Core 2 and a 8800GTX currently running Windows 7. Any ideas?
Re: I know inkscape is slow but...
Other than using layers and disabling currently unneeded layers, there's not really much you can do. Those filters are so nice, but also SO frustrating to use. My system is generally comparable to yours, and I can't use filters with Inkscape not crashing, A lot!
You could try File menu > Vacuum defs, to reduce the file size some. But it's probably more the filter and the zooming. I know when zooming slows me down, I've found that if I can pan the canvas so that only a small portion of the thing I'm zooming is on the screen, the zooming goes faster. Then I can pan back over to the place I want to work.
But it's definitely frustrating! I think we can only support the developers if we can, and be patient

Filter rendering time does not depend on the number of nodes, but the complexity of the filter and the area being rendered. The slowest filter elements are gaussian blur, turbulence and morphology. Large radius morphology is the worst, because it has a big inefficiency - it should be fixed once we switch to Cairo for all rendering (should probably happen for 0.49, provided that some precision issues in Cairo are fixed).

Re: I know inkscape is slow but...
Yes, filters are slow and I am the first one to recognize it ! However that was a great idea to implement this technology already so that simple users can give feedback about them ; that's one of the strength of free software that users are more closely implicated in its development and have more freedom to express about it, don't forget it. Two years ago I was a simple user when I did my first steps at filters design with Inkscape Filters editor, and despite their initial implementation was not always perfect nor performing I was immediately stunned by their power and convinced by their innovative and artistic potential. Thus continue to give them a try and to comment about them, that's the best you can do ; Inkscape community thank you for this help !
Brynn, I have a Core I3 and 4Gb ram and very few crashes with filters (and that was the same with my previous Core2Duo with only 2 Gb). The most frequent crashes for me are while designing filters if I use too much undo, but perhaps that's not directly linked with filters and that's a problem with Filters editor. Could you identify some particular cases of crashing ?
Tweenk, I think you forgot Displacement as a factor or slowness. In particular of course when it's associated with Gaussian blur or Turbulence. Turbulence isn't so slow when there is no displacement added.

Agreed that turning off visibility for layers you aren't working with and generally working without displaying filters are essential for getting anything done with Inkscape at this point. Shrug; looking forward to when this becomes easier, but workarounds do exist.
I wonder, though, whether filter rendering time has anything to do with zoom level? Sometimes I swear that rendering a small area at 400% is slower than rendering a large area at 200%

I guess that's because at closer zoom level Inkscape must add a greater level of details to the filtered area.

Could you identify some particular cases of crashing ?
Um, well not at the moment. I've just read so many messages where filters use is related with slowdowns and crashes, that I assumed it was all known, and just under development. That's why I've never reported specific incidents.
You mentioned using Undo too much. And when I'm working with the Filters Editor, I undo just constantly! Do you know why using Undo a lot with the Filters Editor should cause crashing? Or is it just observation? Because I could delete things sometimes (or Remove Filters), rather than undo, if reducing undo use would help...
From what I can recall at the moment (and my memory is generally poor, lol) most of my crashes have been with the Editor. I remember a lot of crashing while applying filters, at one time, but the Editor may have been open. I can't remember for sure.
But if it would be helpful, I would be glad to gather info when I experience crashes with filters and/or Editor. What info should I gather, and should I save the file for exam by you and/or developers? Also, should I report at Launchpad, here, or directly to you?
After Christmas or New Year, I plan to dive back into learning how to create filters (with your generous offer to help recently). So I may as well be prepared to report crashes, because I know there will be some

The best if you can reproduce filters crashes (or Filters editor crashes) is to report them to Launchpad. But of course I am interested also to test !
