I am an avid user of Inkscape and try to emulate photoshop techniques in inkscape. I have been using the simple brush technique suggested by Rob A, where you copy paths to clipboard and use it a brush. But am stumped to get the overlap part to work. I have watched some tutorials on knots but can get anything to work.

maybe someone can produce even just a little bit of the example in the link.

You could possibly do 1/4 of the circle part and align those to form the curves, that way you can control the overlapping. There are gazillion ways to produce that retroflowthingy. : )

I think I remember reading about this, but don't remember the details. I think it was something to do with Pattern Along Path path effect? Could you either explain it, or provide a link to the topic?

I struggle with pattern along path, so I feel challenged to try. But do let us know the process that you want to use. Because there are other ways (as Loadus mentions) to do this with Inkscape.

I have done this before in Inkscape.

The method I used was to create a series of circles with set radiuses (100px, 80, 60, 40 and 20) align and distribute them so that they are all centred.

Convert them to paths, combine them all ctrl+k. Make a duplicate copy. Each circle should be made out of 4 segments. Delete one of them by selecting the segment and using the "delete segment between two non end-points" in the node tool. (repeat on copies for half turn and 1/4 turn)

That should get you the corner sections.

For the strait sections make a strate path, copy and distribute to match. Then you are at the same stage as the article.

I've got it to work with Pattern Along Path path effect, if that's what you're looking for. But I don't think you'll be able to do it with one continuous path, to get the over/under effect. I think you will need to draw the path, then break it into pieces. After you apply the effect to each portion, you can use the z order commands to place some parts over and some parts under, etc.
