I created this file from an image to SVG and it's impossibly slow to work with, tried on an XP desktop and also a Windows 7 brand new laptop with 6 Gigs or ram, but uneditable...is the file corrupt?
Can't attach so here it is:

Why this file is so slow to work with? It's only 4 megs?

try working with the file in wireframe view. but in the end if the file has thousands of nodes, everything you do will trigger many thousands of (internal) operations, which will bog down the program and windows. Unfortunatelly the desktop variants of windows operating system don't scale at all with additional memory or even additional cpu. If you can manage to cut down on the number of nodes by working in wireframe view, you might be able to end up with a file that's workable in normal view.
The rendering engine in inkscape is due for an overhaul but don't expect it ready just yet.

I presume this is one of those traces which you have mentioned in other topic? Excellent one, but have you checked how many nodes tracing had produced? I`ve managed to open it but then... 254 objects with so many nodes that, while at 200% zoom, I couldn`t see the shapes - just nodes ,) I`ve also seen that many of those shapes have more than 1000 nodes.
Imagine file in GIMP or PS containing 254 layers with fairly large and highres photos on each layer and than all selected for some further action? Wouldn`t that bring some lag?
If you need to work with this kind of files and shapes, perhaps you could consider using different Display modes, like Outline i.e. while having XML dialog open, for easier selecting of desired elements.
I was a bit slow with writing, so chriswww has already answered

Re: Why this file is so slow to work with? It's only 4 megs?
Thanks everybody,
I don't need any nodes or layers, just that simple image as a vector that I can stretch, how can I like "merge" all layers into a single node?
Or how can I "flatten image" as a single layer vector?
Sorry,very new at this!
Cheers!

For starters... visit this page. It would bring a lot more understanding - of Inkscape and terminology in our comments here on forum ,)
I presume that you need this image as a vector, but does it has to be that complex as it is now? There are some other ways to gain realistic vector image, aside of autotracing. Have you tried to draw/trace it by ? Later you should add some gradients, blur or perhaps a filter or a two and that way you`ll end up with a LOT less objects and nodes which would make your working easier and faster. Or, you could stick with autotrace and lag on your computer!? ,)
Merging or flattening of a vector image could correspond to the simplification, or in another words - Les shapes/objects, as simple as possible and then working out how to make it more realistic (varies from case to case). In your case - branch, few leaves and some shadow. Piece of cake, is it? ,) Further adjustments of autotrace could provide you with a nice starting point but depending on how realistic final image has to be, that much work is ahead of you.
Full sails!

Re: Why this file is so slow to work with? It's only 4 megs?
Hi Full sails,
I'm totally satisfied with the image just the way it is, no need to modifiy anything, just to make it lighter, get rid of all the effects, layers, nodes whatever! Problem is I need this vector image workable in 2 hours! ;(
So not much time to look at tutorials for now....
If you have time can you flatten it for me and just repost it here? Just if you have time that is, not meaning to ask...
Cheers!
Bruno

Alright, let`s try it out... but, could you tell why do you need photorealistic vector image? For printing? If so, why don`t you use the image which you previously traced and when you finish with designing and all that has to be done - then run the autotrace and send the file to printshop. How does it sounds?

Because that vector image needs to pluggin into another vector file, the label file, need to merge it into one, then paste in the lable.
I need that image and a lot of others to be pasted into the file I'm attaching.
Not sure if I traced it or not...I used a filter from JPEG and traced a Bitmap...
Was foolish of me to think I could have this done today...and I have 3 more labels also that need to add images like this!

Hi Maestral,
How did you do that? You're a genius, looks better than a real pic
I'll need to do some reading once this rush is over...
Cheers!
