I tried reporting this on Launchpad, but I have no means of tracking this or reliably reproducing this crash.
Inkscape simply DISAPPEARS on me.
I'll be happily working away and then BAM it's gone. Poof. No inkscape. No backup save or nothing, as far as I can see, and nothing I can do reproduces the error. Thus I can't report it for it to be officially acknowledged, and thus it can't be fixed, and thus I'm left cursing at Adobe Illustrator for crashing only slightly less frequently.
Well, actually, I guess it CAN be reproduced... just don't save your work for as long as possible, make some major breakthrough that makes you think you should save just as soon as you're done laying down that line, and preferably be using the Pen Tool to pull on node handles (though it's done the same thing while I've been typing out Text, so who knows?).
Incidentally, this forum has serious troubles loading on Internet Explorer. None of the links work and none of the images show up, and it's impossible to register so long as one is using IE. The register link, for example, links to "http:///ucp.php?mode=register&sid=3ab86744d5a826a8811f11a5415a96f7" - you can see how most of the URL is missing! Leads to "the address is invalid" messages.
The forum also has other messed up links that don't work in Firefox either. Try the 'cry' icon while posting and you'll see that instead of an error message, your post disappears as you're redirected to "Whoops, invalid address!" again.
All that aside, this program could be perfect for what I'm doing.
I'm using a Toshiba M200 Portege with all the official drivers, no spyware, no viruses, and no bunch of crap running in Task Manager, running Inkscape 0.46 and Windows XP Tablet edition with all the latest updates except for .Net 2 and 3.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Will there ever be an auto-save feature for Inkscape?
the randomly disappearing program...
Re: the randomly disappearing program...
You never said what operating system you are using. If it's a Mac, do a search on this forum because I think I've seen a discussion like this before.
I'm very sorry about the issue with IE. I really need to test all my changes in all browser - I just don't expect IE to crap out so badly when other browsers work fine after my changes. I've been trying to work around an issue with the phpBB3 template.

Windows XP Tablet Edition - I'm fairly certain it's Windows XP Pro with tablet pc drivers thrown in. Fortunately Rygel on Launchpad was kind enough to include another option to trace down this problem, so I'll be making the most of it! ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/221712 )
I've tried searching the forum for 'disappearing', 'disappears' and 'disappear' - apparently the term disappear when searched doesn't turn up if it's part of another word, heh - but I'll try 'vanish' and variants thereon to see what it gets.
Thank you for fixing the forum to work with IE! And the crying icon too, though now there's no need to use it. Hee. I'm sure it was a bigger disappointment to you than to me for how badly IE crapped out with it... though, that could've been a bonus. Think of all the nubbish backward IE browser users who've been kept away from asking silly questions about this marvellous program... the forum will no longer be the domain of elite Firefox users! Nooo!
Bravo at the quick fixing!

Re: the randomly disappearing program...
Found the Mac issue - that's to do with X11, whatever that is - and seems unrelated to the disappearing act I've been experiencing. Trying to track it down now, but with frequent saves it just ain't happening. Heh.
Will have to register to avoid double posting - can't edit my previous post, I realize that wildcards were necessary to avoid trouble searching, so s'all good. ^^

Re: the randomly disappearing program...
Yeah, if you're on XP then the Mac issue will most likely be unrelated.
I guess another question to ask is, does this happen only with the same SVG file, or multiple SVG files? If it's just the one it might provide some clues for the developers.
And for reference, autosave has been requested a few times. You can find some information about it in this post - viewtopic.php?f=5&t=649

Re: the randomly disappearing program...
Hmm, semi-multiple files. As in the file itself, and its backup which was designed earlier on - both then continued along different paths.
I'm not completely sure but I may have opened one of them with Adobe Illustrator, saved it, and then returned to it in Inkscape... but it crashed before Illustrator anyway, which is why I grabbed Illustrator (and then of course Illustrator has all sorts of stupid crashes, including one that happens WHEN YOU SAVE if the print spooler service hasn't been started... gah!).
I'll test out another brand new SVG file today though and see what happens.
Edit: Copied and pasted the artwork to a new file and seeing how it goes. I did encounter a different error noticed some time after briefly opening up an SVGZ file that'd been saved in Adobe Illustrator. I'm not sure whether the error messages are related in any way to the crashing... probably not.
I did notice the View and Layer menu seemed to have some trouble showing up/refreshing when selected - briefly - before I noticed these errors.
