I am trying out the Inkscape font creator features but I seem to have reached in impasse.

I can't seem to add any more than one glyph, I can successfully create a shape, convert it to a path and add it as a glyph (using 'get curves from selection') for the letter a.

But if I try to create another glyph for b either with the same shape I just used successfully with a or another one it doesn't work, I cannot add anything.
I can add the glyph but I can't assign any shape to it, not even the same one I just assigned successfully to the first glyph for a.
If I try to add a third glyph I get the same problem, so I am limited to an alphabet of one letter which could be a slight setback

I'm not sure what to do.

Try to overlap the paths that you use for each glyph, or put them in different layers...

Preview text needs to be desired string character a,b,c,d etc...
Paths must be a single path, not a group, no overlapping paths.
desired glyph/string must be selected in list

Ok thanks, I fixed it.

I missed the preview text at the bottom as being a crucial part of the process, it has to literally list the characters 'abcdefgh' etc.

Having the name preview, I thought it was maybe just an extra name field that you didn't really need but was there for convenience or quick reference.
