I am having trouble deleting a segment of a path. I tried to work with the "nodes" function but I am having no luck. I worked through the guide that someone gave me in another forum, did some searches on altering paths, etc, but I still am not making any progress.

What I want to do is to delete the path inside the orb, so that it appears the ring goes around the orb. It seems like this should be easy to do, but damned if I have been able to do it, even after looking at threads about nodes and using the inkscape guide all morning. Any help would be greatly appreciated, sorry for asking such a simple question, but everyone is a novice at some time, no?

Jaime, no problem -- these forums are full of my simple questions
There may be more than one way to do what you want. In any case, there needs to be a node at each end of the segment you want to delete.
One way:
Using the Node tool ( ) select each node (which define the segment you want to delete) and click the "Break path at selected nodes" button. Then, just select the segment, and click delete, or use the keyboard Delete key.
Another way:
Using the Node tool ( ) select each node (which define the segment you want to delete) and click the "Split path between selected nodes" button.
I hope this is helpful.

I don't think that simply deleting part of the path will have the desired effect, because the ends of the path won't be quite right. It would be better to use a clipping path to clip out the unwanted part of the ring.

Agreed, you need to use a clip. Otherwise the ends of the path will blur.
