Anybody using Tavmjong Bah Inkscape guide book

Postby nihon94 » Sun Oct 18, 2015 2:57 pm

I wonder if any of the Inkscape forum member is using Tavmjong Bah Inkscape guide to a vector drawing program.
No doubt this book got interesting topic but the language used some time is very difficult. I felt as if this book is for those who already achieved expert level in Inkscape.

Or is there any place to discuss about various tutorials?

Thank you

That manual is the only thing close to an official manual, since it's what you get if you go to Help menu > Inkscape manual. So tons of people use it!

However, because it's copyrighted, no one but the author can update it, and it has not been updated to the current version 0.91. And I haven't heard anything about when it might ever be updated. I hope we can find a way to make an Inkscape manual that can be edited by anyone or at least a team, but it won't happen quickly. And there's another possibility, of creating a step-by-step manual (rather than Tav's which is more theory and technical info) but we need a French to English translator, to get it started. Someone has started writing one in French, but it needs to be in English, before a team can build on it. (I hope I said that all correctly, Moini :D)

OH! There is another manual, written by a team. You could try this one: http://www.flossmanuals.net/inkscape/. Not a step-by-step manual though. Maybe not much better, as far as being easy for newbies. But definitely worth looking at.

When I first started learning how to use Inkscape, I had the same feeling, about that manual being hard for a newbie to understand. But I found Help menu > Tutorials, and those set me on my way. And with help from the forum, I've learned so much that now I understand the manual fairly well.

The Quick Start section of the manual is designed to help people learn Inkscape quickly. It may be easier to understand. (I never actually found it until much, much later, in my learning curve, so I can't say how helpful it might be. But a lot of people use it, and seem to be successful with it.

I've made an effort to create a centralized source of quality tutorials, on my website: Inkscape Community. Most of the tutorials are on other sites, so they're just links. But we're slowly building a collection that live there.

Good luck on learning Inkscape! You'll love it :D

Please don't hesitate to post a message if you need specific help.

I'm a newcomer to Inkscape and the best tutorials I have found so far are the articles in Full Circle Magazine. Tutorials 1 - 25 are collected into three separate pdf files, but you have to download the rest individually.

There is a thread by user Xav here
