When I try to paste into either a text box or the text tab, nothing appears.

How much text is it that you're trying to paste?

Did you enable to the Text tool first? After that, did you click once on the canvas? Are you sure the layer is active?

If you dragged out a text box, and the text box isn't big enough, the text might not show up. However, unless you know what Flowed Text is, and you specifically want to use it, I would suggest not to make a text box.

Instead, click once on the canvas (on an active layer) with the Text tool, then paste. If it's a ton of text, it might take a few seconds to appear.

System: OSX 10.12.6, Inkscape 0.91 now upgraded to 0.92.2

By text tool do you mean the 'A' button, then used to drag a 'text box'. I've tried pasting 6 words (I have about half a page ultimately), directly into this or by via the menu: Text > Text and font > Text tab. Using the latter, if I right click, the Paste option is greyed out as if there's nothing to paste. However, in the word processor, I've definitely copied words and can paste them with the original application.

I should add that using either of the above methods in Inkscape to directly type text works fine. The problem in limited to inability to paste text from another app.

Oooohhh, you're using the Text and Font dialog! Geez, I couldn't figure out what you meant by the "Text tab"! I never use that dialog.

Instead of pasting the text in there, paste it directly onto the canvas (after clicking once with the Text tool , or dragging a text box, if you want Flowed Text).

Have you made the adjustments to the XQuartz settings as recommended here:
