Can't transfer SVG files from Windows 7 to Windows 10

Postby bj_1980 » Sun Sep 25, 2016 7:56 am

Hello to all. First, I would like to start out by saying that it is a privilege to be a member of this forum. I have been using Inkscape version 0.48.4 in Windows 7 64bit operating system for awhile with few problems. Recently I had my desktop in the shop and one of the things I wanted done was to have all my files from programs I currently use transferred to my new laptop this includes Inkscape. I have a laptop with Windows 10 64bit operating system. When I open up Inkscape version 0.48.4 the program opens with no problems...but no files.

To try to remedy this problem I downloaded Inkscape version 0.48.4, 0.48.5 and 0.91 and tried to transfer the SVG files via a portable hard drive with no success. I don't where the problem lies....PLEASE help me, I have nearly 4 1/2 years of work thank again.

Greetings

As You describe, your problem is strange.
On Your windows 10 system, you can open Inkscape 0.91, but Inkscape doesn't open the SVG files?... Can You show us if there is any error message?

Or

On Your Win 10 System, You want to transfer SVG files from Your portable hard drive but Win 10 denies it. If that is the problem, I guess it's more a problem of Win 10, or perhaps an Anti VIrus or Windows firewall. I'm only guessing here. Based on that, my recommendation is contacting to Win10 support or Your Anti-Virus support.

To be honest, I've experimented similar behaviour with Win 10 in a laptop, but It was related to... well... not so clean files.

Or, You can transfer the SVG files, but the Inkscape's icon doesn't appear on them when watched with the file explorer of Windows. And When You do double click on them they aren't recognized for Windows... About that, please consult win the support of Windows 10.

Please confirm one of the guesses.
If you have problems:
1.- Post a sample (or samples) of your file please.

Hello hulf2012. Thank you for your response. Today I came up with a possible solution to the problem. I will just link my desktop and laptop together, open up Inkscape on both systems and just copy then paste them into Inkscape on Windows 10 and lastly save them. Thanks again for your help

Hi bj,
It sounds like you might have a bit of a misunderstanding about Inkscape and file storage. The files you create with Inkscape can be stored anywhere you want. Whenever you save a file for the first time, it asks you where you want to save it.

I'm currently in the process of configuring a new Windows 10 system, and have just transferred all my files a few days ago. That was before I had actually installed Inkscape! So Inkscape and where the files are stored are not related, until you tell Inkscape where they are.

There are a number of ways you could transfer your files. Can you tell us how you are attempting to transfer them?

I used a usb drive (flash drive, usb stick, thumb drive, whatever you want to call them). Here's how I did it.

1 - plug in the drive stick
2 - Open Windows Explorer > Pictures > My Pictures
3 - Put the mouse on the right side of Windows Explorer window and click once
4 - Ctrl A will select all the files in My Pictures - or hold Ctrl key while you click on all the files you want to transfer
5 - right-click > Copy (or you might try Send To, to find out if the usb drive is shown there - if so, click that - otherwise, continuing with how I did it....)
6 - Go down to the bottom of Windows Explorer and find the usb drive folder (note that sometimes a usb drive will show me a few folders, maybe called Drive E, Drive F, or whatever - so you have to be sure and find the right one....or if it's a brand new stick, just remember which folder you use)
7 - click on the drive in the left side of Windows Explorer, then click on the right side, and do right-click > Paste
8 - If your Pictures file was as large as mine is, you might have to wait as much as an hour, for the file transfer to be complete. For some people, maybe even more than that, if they have tons of files, or maybe not so many but really large files. You'll see prompts on the screen that tells you how it's going and when it's finished. And always right-click the icon in the system tray or notification area....or on Windows 10 it's called something else entirely....I can't remember at the moment. Anyway, right-click the icon to find out if it's safe to remove the drive.

Just re-reading your message. You said you took the computer to a tech support person, for the purpose of having all your files transferred. But they didn't transfer them? Maybe they did, but you haven't found them?

In Windows 10, there is no longer a Windows Explorer. Now you have to find either This PC or there will be an icon with your name on it. No matter where your guy put them, you should be able to find using This PC. But it makes more sense that he would have put them in your personal account (the icon with your name on it). Or it might say My Files or something like that. I can't remember, because I sent it to the Recycle Bin (because it's redundant) (because This PC includes personal files too).

Let me know if you still need help. Maybe we can help each other cope with this Windows 10 nightmare, lol.
