File size/Website

Postby lolli » Fri Jul 31, 2015 2:22 am

Hi,
so I have a question reagrding the file size. I have an svg image that is 29,1 kb. I opened this image in Inkscape and made it really tiny, like 10px x 10px. I saved it again as a plain svg and the file size was 32.8 kb. How can this happen?
Also, I noticed that when I upload an svg to my Wordpress site, in the media library it will show the correct kb size of the svg(same kb size as in Inkscape), but when I view the image on the actual website ad right click on it "graphic info" it will show a much smaller size, like 11 kb...what is going on there and which is correct?

Thank you so much!

I'd take a look at both files in a text editor to see the difference in content.

WRT the wordpress difference, I'd look at the source code and see how wordpress handles the SVG content.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Bear in mind that the S in SVG stands for "scalable". SVG images don't consist of individual pixels, but rather instructions about how the computer should draw the image - e.g. lists of coordinates. So whether it's 10px x 10px or the size of a billboard won't make a huge amount of difference to the file size, since that's mostly dependent on the number and type of the objects, not the number of pixels.

If you're really concerned about file size, make sure you use "Vacuum Defs" (0.48) or "Clean up document" (0.91), then save as "Optimised SVG", which will let you tweak the output file in a number of ways in order to reduce its size. Make sure you also save an Inkscape SVG first, though, in case you need to edit the original (complete with all the Inkscape metadata) in future.

Hi,
I always clean up the document but most of the time it will say there is nothing to clean. If I save as optimized, my font(it is a hand drawn font) will break, same happens when I lessen the decimals in the Inkscape settings. I tried using several svg optimizers/compressors and weirdly enough if I use all 3 of them I get the smallest filze size. I don't know exactly what each of them does, but if I only use of them, it will not reduce enough ost of the time.
So I noticed that in the xml of one image there was a color mentioned that is not in the actual image anlonger. I filled the image with blue at first,, but changed it then to red. So now there is still the hex of the blue color mentioned...does this mean EVERY change I make to the image is stored in the data? Is it possible to delete this?

Thank you for your help,
lolli
