make a path from a crest

Postby Pedroski » Fri Apr 15, 2016 1:17 pm

I have the attached crest. I want to change the Latin to something more jocular. However, the image I have is poor quality, only 42KB. I started drawing over it using my wacom tablet and pen, drawing Bezier curves over everything. That seems to be a long process. I'm not good at that.

To be clear: The text on a path is no problem. The dragon and the leaves and shield with book are the problem. When I print this image at A4 size, it is awful!

Is there some tool or filter which will create a path on the basis of this image, which I can save as a vector image. Because the image is poor quality, the 'trace a bitmap' tool doesn't produce very good results.

Do I have to do this by hand?

Thanks for any tips!

When you perform a reversed google image search, you can find several versions of your crest in bigger sizes.
They are all embedded in pdfs, but if you open the pdf in Inkscape you can extract an image 1114x1888px.

Thanks, but that image is also not very good, the lines are short vertical lines at high zoom or large print size. If I could get a path, it would scale nicely.

Not all are embedded: http://www.hpcc.ecs.soton.ac.uk/~dan/hart_1110.png
I doubt there is any SVG version available.
And "yes" in case you need a high quality equivalent you need to draw it manually.
Large parts can be mirrored and just need to be drawn one time; the griffin is probably the "worst" part of it. Otherwise not kind of a big deal just time consuming and a challenge in patience.

Since you have a wacom I would suggest cleaning up the raster image first in a raster editor.

A vacom?? I am not aware of being in possession of such an animal, not knowing what that is!

The last linked image is 2.4 MB, which is good. I'll draw paths over that, till I get what I want!

Thanks a lot!

You'll find tons of ready made heraldic elements on https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ca ... s_elements

Paintbrush tool -with mouse.

(That's the second version, previous one was made by reducing number of colours, select by color, copy/paste, alpha to layer mask, deleting&bucket fill. But closed it accidentally when it was close to finish without saving...)

Thank's!

Still it would take a few hours cleaning up the outlines that way.

Thanks a lot guys! Can't open the dropbox with the xcf, I'm in China and my vpn stopped working, never mind. I'll get a new one soon! But I've got enough!
