How to replicate Filter >ABC > Black Outline

Postby kc42 » Sun Mar 29, 2015 1:54 pm

Hello,
I was using a previous version of Inkscape running on Linux (I am sorry, I don't know what version, that laptop is fried) and I was proficient enough with it to meet my simple needs. Now I have a newer computer running Windows. I downloaded Inkscape .91 and everything I use seems just the same except for one item. I was using the Black Outline for text. I would apply the filter twice to get a thicker outline. I have used this same look for text on thumbnails for a while and it is important to me that all my thumbnails look the same.

I looked online and it seems the Black Outline filter is replaced by Morphology>Outline. I played around with that but the outline is either blurry or jagged or too thin. I also saw a tutorial online that uses the stoke and fill menu. I have never used this menu and I don't fully understand it. I was able to get an outline but still it is too thin or the outline is cutting into the text.

All I did to make my thumbnails before was import my photo, add text, apply the black outline filter twice, then export my bitmap. It was very easy and only a couple extra clicks to get the outline and it really helps the text to stand out on my thumbnails.

Thank you!

Hi.

Make a text object with a black stroke -and whatever fill-, and a duplicant (Ctrl+D) above it with no stroke but that lime fill.

[Outer or inner outlines are requested svg features (? as far as I can remember; a search can bring up some results in the forum).]

I've only got a development version of 0.91 on this machine, so it's possible that things might have changed with the final release, but...

On my version, Filters > Morphology > Outline presents a dialog with plenty of options. There's a pop-up menu labelled "Position" - setting this to "Outside" avoids the text thinning. Theres also a checkbox labelled "Smooth" - unchecking this removes the blurriness.

It's been proposed for SVG2.0, but according to item 31 in this document, it's been accepted but "deferred". So it may not make it for 2.0, and even if it does, there's no telling when Inkscape will support it (though I would imagine it's high on the list of things the developers want to include, once there's a spec).

you could also do a dynamic offset, right ?

so type your green text
duplicate
change colour to black
convert to path (CTRL +C -> Ungroup -> Combine)
send to the back
go to Path -> Dynamic Offset and drag the node with your Path Tool (F2)
for finetuning, go into the xml editor (under Edit) and type in the radius you want)

Is there still a way to set up a filter to do this (so you get the benefit of automatic outlines when you change or edit the text).
