fine tuning gradient

Postby pagou » Thu May 23, 2013 12:32 am

hello
i come from AI and am a little confused about how thinks work.
in gradient :tool_gradient: i can ad point and give them collor by click on the line.
is any way to adjust the position of the point, not by mouse, but by numbers?

thanks

Well, the gradient editor is apparently doomed for replacement (has been for years). But at least in the last stable version of Inkscape, it is still in use. With an object with a gradient selected, and the Gradient tool engaged, there's an "Edit...." link on the tool control bar. And there's also a link in Fill and Stroke dialog on either Fill tab or Stroke paint tab (also with the gradient selected). Either will open the Gradient Editor.

I'm not sure if it's still in use in the experimental/developmental 0.49, or not?

I think you can also move the gradient stops with arrow keys, and also Alt + arrow, but can't remember for sure.

Hi.

For total and full control of all elements in the SVG file you can use the XML editor. Shift + Ctrl + X
In the editor window you can expand the tree to find the gradient. You can then enter numerical values to your heart's content!

From the manual:
    XML editor

The ultimate power tool of Inkscape is the XML editor Shift + Ctrl + X.
It displays the entire XML tree of the document, always reflecting its current state.
You can edit your drawing and watch the corresponding changes in the XML tree.
Moreover, you can edit any text, element, or attribute nodes in the XML editor and see the result on your canvas.
This is the best tool imaginable for learning SVG interactively,
and it allows you to do tricks that would be impossible with regular editing tools.

i think that inkscape its really good program that can give you equal results with AI /CDR, for a variety of applications, but if i had to use the XML editor to have control over my objects, well .... its awkward, and i need 2 screens for the same visual space.

but i want to have an alternative option, so i invest time to learn it

thanks for your answers

If you're running inkscape <0.49 you can launch the gradient editor by clicking edit in the toolbar (as Bryn said) then you got a popup where you can choose a node from the dropdown and move it "by numbers" by setting its offset directly (or by dragging the slider)
Offset is between 0 and 1. 0 = start of gradient 1 = end of gradient.

If you're running inkscape >= 0.49 the number input and slider are in the toolbar options.

V1nce is probably using a development version of Inkscape. The number stamped on the Inkscape development version might resemble 0.48+devel r12xxx. Not technically 0.49 ... but closer to 0.49 than 0.48.

If you're interested in trying a development version of Inkscape, this is a list of various .7z'd versions:

Developer Versions compressed using 7-zip

You know the drill: decompress using 7-zip into a folder of your choice, right-click the inkscape.exe and choose copy then create a shortcut by right-clicking and choosing Paste Shortcut.

Ok - I was confused for a while, I am getting the dev versions from the page you linked to.
