I have a complex path with many nodes (about 1000).
Currently, it is shown as a black staggered line with sharp edges, similar to what you what expect for example if you were looking at the Dow Jones curve over a few days.
I would like to have another copy of my path, but with dots/circles/squares on the nodes and no connecting lines - so one can see the nodes in scattered form.
I think one possible way to do this is to create a small circle and somehow duplicate it onto the nodes of the path, but I couldn't find online how to do this... If there is another way it would be great too - I just want to achieve the scatter plot somehow.
Thanks!
Breaking Down a Path to Individual Nodes
Re: Breaking Down a Path to Individual Nodes
I think what you are looking for is an invisible path with visible markers.

Or maybe just different color of path and markers.
In short form:
You need to allow Inkscape to have different colors for the Path (none) and for the markers (your color).
Default setting is: always the same as the path color.
1. Use the Fill&Stroke dialog (Shift+Ctrl+F) and choose in stroke style your desired markers and the stroke paint.
2. Then go to:
Menubar | Preferences | Behavior | Markers | Color stock markers the same color as object (uncheck!)
3. Then change the stroke paint to none. The path should disappear but the markers should stay in your color.
Pretty tedious, also if you want to change the color of the markers. I don't know if there is an easier way.

If circles are ok, you could use the "Number nodes" extension, then delete the text (numbers) leaving the circles.
Menu: Extensions>Visualize Path>Number nodes

If you don't like circles, here's another way:

This would be perfect if the markers were all oriented the same direction, but they follow the segment orientation.

Re: Breaking Down a Path to Individual Nodes
What about the Show Handles LPE? It can show paths, handles and/or nodes. So you could set it to show the nodes, which will all be right-side-up, and not show the path or the node handles.
You would apply this LPE to a duplicate of the the path.
Although with this, you're limited to using squares to indicate the nodes. I think squares is all it will do.
