Intuos4 works in 0.47 but not 0.48 (Win7)

Postby echonaut » Sun Jan 15, 2012 7:30 am

Windows 7 64bit

I originally downloaded the latest version, 0.48.2-1, and found that my Intuos4 tablet would not work as a tablet within the program. It worked just fine, but only as a mouse, ie, no pressure sensitivity. I did a little digging and I read someone say that they used an older version of Inkscape for pressure sensitivity and, sure enough, version 0.47 did have pressure sensitivity. Unfortunately it was a bit spotty (required to de-activate and re-activate pressure sensitivity every time I opened a new document) and i would prefer to use the latest version.

Is there something that I'm missing? I've made sure that 'Use pressure-sensitive tablet' is activated in Inkscape Preferences, and I've gone to Input Devices and fiddled with that a bit. However the new Input Devices window in 0.48 is a lot *less* intuitive than earlier versions, and I do not understand what I am looking at. Here is a screenshot of what I see:

I do not have the ability to check the box next to Hardware or Wacom Tablet -- I can check Pressure Stylus, Eraser, and Core Pointer. If I enable the Eraser and try to draw something then Inkscape freaks out on me and locks up, with a ton of random lines.

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get my tablet to work? I'd like to use the latest version and not be stuck with 0.47 until the latest version comes out. My tablet works flawlessly in all other pressure-sensitive applications, including GIMP and MyPaint.

Thanks!

No. The fault is in the newer version of the GTK+ stack used with Inkscape 0.48.2 on Windows (v2.22.1). You could test with an earlier dot release (e.g. 0.48.1 or 0.48.0) which use an older GTK+ stack (v2.16.6, same as 0.47 AFAIK).

Wacom tablets should work with pressure sensitivity in Inkscape 0.48.1 (at least with windows) The functionality should be considerably better that 0.47.

Is it still the case that tablet users must downgrade?

I'm most disappointed. I was so hoping to do some drawing tonight and I've spent the last two hours trying to find a way to get my tablet to work... it'll probably be another month or two before I get another 2 hours to try again :D

On Linux, Inkscape 0.48.3 uses GTK 2.24 and presure sensivity works well. Isn't there a 0.48.3 version for Windows, too?

I use Inkscape 0.48 on Ubuntu 12.04.

Get the most recent installer for Windows [ * ] (not officially announced yet) or a development snapshot build (unstable!) [ * ] - AFAIK both use a rather current GTK2 stack (2.24.8), and tablets ought to be working fine again (including pressure sensitivity).

(Note: on recent Ubuntu versions, there's a known issue triggered by Unity's custom overlay scrollbars which prevent pressure sensitivity from working in Inkscape - not an bug with GTK+ or Inkscape itself AFAIU).

I saw the version 0.48.3-1 last night when looking for 0.48.1 and downloaded. It seemed to get stuck during the install and I ended up leaving it running whilst I went to sleep. But it did eventually finish the tablet works perfectly. Thanks :)

In 0.48.3.1, pressure sensitivity is faster than ever, with no inaccuracies and no lag time! Great work by the developers!

I use the development builds for windows as soon as i can get them, and I have to say there is a HUGE difference between the last one (r11460) and 0.48.3.1 in terms of tablet usability. So if they are using the same GTK package (see ~suv's post above) I guess the problem is elsewhere.

Such a simple but wonderful example of how excellent a tablet and Inkscape can be, druban :)

Intuos tablet works in 0.48.3.1 but not 0.48.2.1, winXT

Postby JKJ » Sat Jul 28, 2012 10:21 am

I discovered Inkscape a few days ago while searching for software that could convert and output .EMF files for input into special digitizing software that controls an embroidery machine. This is fantastic! BTW, I am retired with extensive experience in software development and 3D graphics modeling/animation (3DSMAX).

I discovered the pressure stylus of a Wacom Intuos(1) tablet in WinXP will not work with 0.48.2.1 but works with 0.48.3.1. I am posting about this in case someone is interested.

When I connected the Intuos under 0.48.2.1 (with latest Wacom driver, 6.1.2-5) everything worked well until I tried to use the pressure stylus feature. No go. I read everything I could find on this forum and tried many things for many hours with no success. The Inkscape Input Devices configuration required both the Tablet Pressure Stylus and Tablet Eraser to be enabled in order for the Hardware test routines to even sense and display position, pressure, and tilt data. However, having both enabled hosed things, first the button sensing and then the Inkscape UI. Drawing anything caused lines to go off the top of the screen to infinity or beyond. The calligraphy tool did nothing visible. A few moments of trying almost always locked the UI and crashed Inkscape, requiring an end task from the Windows task manager.

Disabling the Tablet Eraser option proved the program stable with the tablet use, except the pressure data was ignored. Bummer.

The Intuos with pressure stylus works perfectly in Photoshop.

I found and installed the 0.48.3.1 build and the tablet and pressure stylus now work as expected. I had no driver or Inkscape configuration changes so the only thing different on the system was the incremental build. Whatever was changed fixed things on my system.

I do have a few questions about operation but I'll ask those in another area. Thanks.

I really want to convert totally over to Linux and Inkscape because they are both lightweight programs with great advantages. The downside is that unlike other users here my Wacom Intuos3 (small 4x6 inch) tablet has ZERO pressure sensitivity in Inkscape 0.48.3.1 r9886 (on Ubuntu 12.10).

Anyone have Ubuntu 12.10 and any Wacom Intuos3 that works?
