Postby lolli » Fri Sep 11, 2015 11:34 pm

Hi,
I have aproblem with Inkscape. It is still showing fonts that I no longer have on my computer. I tried unistalling Inkscape completely and reinstalling it again, and it STILL shows the fonts. How can I get rid off them?

Thanks for any help.

Inkscape can only use fonts that are installed. So Inkscape must think they are installed.

What is your operating system? How did you uninstall the fonts?

Hi,
I am using Windows 10, Inkscape 0.91
I uninstalled the fonts by going into all the fonts in my computer and deleting it.

And you've restarted Inkscape since you finished deleting them?

Yes, I completely uninstalled it, chekced if there was any Inkscape or font-related material on the computer(and there wasn't), and downloaded Inkscape again. And the font is there...even though it is nowhere else on my computer, not in Open Office Word etc...

Hhmmm.... I'm stumped.

My best guess, for the next thing to try, is to rename the preferences.xml file, then restart Inkscape.

Look in Inkscape Preference > System > User preferences to find the path to that file. When you find it, rename it something like preferences-old.xml. Then close Inkscape and re-open.

If that solves the problem, that means that the problem was with the preferences file. I don't actually know how it could be, but I've seen this fix similar problems before.

If that does solve the problem, then I'm not sure about the next step. You may want to just continue from there. But you will also find that all your preferences have been reset to defaults. There must be some way, now that we know the problem is in that file, to just delete the data that was keeping the fonts there. But I don't know how to do that.

So, if that solves the problem, AND you want to still retain all your prefs, someone else will have to take over, and tell you how.

If that does not solve the problem, go back and 1) delete the new preferences.xml, and 2) then rename the old file to what it was before. So now your preferences will be back as before. But if it doesn't solve the problem, I have no more ideas what to do.

Let us know how it goes :D

Hi,
how do I even get the preferences window to open properly? It is TINY and there is no resize option, see screenshot.

Did you use the Windows Font manager or just delete the font files? If you did the latter, then it's possible the registry has some errors and Inkscape thinks the fonts are still there but other application know that they are gone.

Hi, no, I used the Windows font manager. And I also tried uninstalling Inkscape through the Uninstall file and choosing NOT to save user configurations, but the font is still there when reinstalling Inkscape. You don't see the correct letter shapes beside the font name, but you can you the font and save the file you cretaed with it...
The problem I have with this is that this font is an older version and I have the new version of the font which I would like to use instead, and it will not overwrite the old version, even when I install the new version on my computer.

If you renamed preferences.xml, and the closed and restarted Inkscape, and the fonts are still there -- I'm stumped. I don't know what else to try. But maybe styxlawyer is on to something?

I think you may have a Windows registry problem. Try the following (in this order:

1. Uninstall Inkscape.
2. Run Ccleaner (free download here) to remove all the broken registry entries.
3. Install your new fonts.
4. Finally re-install Inkscape.

If that doesn't fix it then I'm also stumped as to what the cause could be.

I somewhat doubt that this is the case. More likely, an internal change in Inkscape 0.91 for Windows might affect which installed fonts Inkscape actually sees, and which name the fonts are listed with in Inkscape (some name(s) might differ from what is shown in native Font managers).

Similar earlier topic here in the forum: «Font issue». I also recall that the same question was asked on Inkscape's Facebook page earlier this year (I don't use Fb myself, so I have no link to share).

A few technical details had been mentioned in this thread on the devel mailing list: «Subject: non-Unicode symbol fonts do not work on Windows. Bug 165665. Do we need the flag USE_PANGO_WIN32 ?» - please note though that this link is not shared to provide direct help to Windows users (it is a discussion on the developers' mailing list).

I really appreciate yozr support! Unfortunately, even after running the cleaner, the font is still there :x I am just at a loss as I really need the new version of the font to work with. The only thing I can hope for is for Inkscape to come out wih a new version and that updating would solve the problem...
Does anyone know though how to solve the problem regarding the preferences window size that I mentioned earlier in this thread?

Sorry, obviously that's the detail I missed in the earlier message …

Maybe the solution found in this earlier topic helps: Re: Uninstalled Font still usable in Inkscape

Hi, hmmm...I don't really understand what he is saying by "accessing the file through a different file manager"...how would I do this?

There's a few free Windows file managers here. One of them should do the job.

Alternatively, you can use an FTP client such as Filezilla.

Great news.

Can you edit the title of the first post to mark the thread [Resolved]? It may help others in the future.

Go to the first post in the thread and click on the "Edit" button. That should allow you to change the subject line to add "[RESOLVED]" at the start.
