Can I get a new manual in pdf form?

Postby leonardevens » Sun Feb 06, 2011 5:37 am

I bought the hard copy inkscape manual. I am now using insckape 0.48 under Fedora 14 on a new machine. I find it has changed from the version which the manual describes.

It would be nice if I could download the new manual for free. Expecting us to purchase a new manual with each release is a bit much.

But, assuming the developer doesn't allow that, is there some way to just download the new features?

Hi leonardevens,
It doesn't seem reasonable to me either, that one should have to buy a new book for each new release of Inkscape. So I looked at the book's and pdf's websites: http://www.informit.com/store/product.a ... 1735&rll=1 and http://www.informit.com/store/product.a ... 134X&rll=1, respectively. I see a link that says "Register your product to gain access to bonus material or receive a coupon." Perhaps the coupon is for updates??

I suppose you've already looked in the book itself, for info on updates? It seems to me there should be something like free updates or revisions, or something. Also I'm sure you know that you can refer to the online manual for free http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/index.php

Thanks.

It turns out I had bought both the book and the pdf version, which are registered. However, they are just the Third Edition, which is what the online help version is.
Your other links give a link to a draft of the fourth edition, but I don't see any way to download it.

In any case, what I'm trying to find is how to interpret the File>Open command which when I use it on an image file asks me to choose embed or link. I don't completely understand the difference, and I haven't been able to find any discussion of the matter.

Yes, I saw your question in the other topic you posted. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer. But I'm sure others will.....~suv always shows links to info on new features. I will try to find it too, and then I'll reply in the other topic.

Sorry about the book/update/revision issue. You say you registered, so I guess the coupon was not for a discount on updates? I was only guessing about that
But I'll try to find info on your other issue, and if I can't find it, someone else probably will (and we'll all reply in that other topic, viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8616, OK?)

I think the coupon was for a copy of the pdf file, and I already used it.

Well darn it!
I'm sure someone will know the answer, I'm just not sure who, or else I would PM. But hang in there, it shouldn't be too long :D

I thought about explaining all nuances and ended up writing an article. Read up :)

I emailed Tav, the author of the book, his reply was this:

Thanks for your email. I tried to register for inkscapeforum so I could
answer the question directly but unfortunately it didn't work. My guess
is the registration confirmation email didn't make it through my
Internet provider's very strict spam filter.

While the publisher does not offer free updates for the book,
as has been noted, you can always see the latest book (minus three
tutorials exclusive to the book) at my website. A draft of the next
edition of the book is available at:

http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL_v16/html/

The issue of Embedding vs Linking is discussed (although not nearly as
completely as by Alexander) at:

http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... mport.html

Tav

So thats your definitive answer on the book front.
