Not too long ago I read something that listed 2 Inkscape compatible probrams, one that was great for editing scanned images, black and white only was best, and the other for color images. Can anyone tell me what they were? I'm pretty sure it was a news/update email type of thing but I can't find the info anywhere.

Listed WHAT? Programs perhaps?
I don't quite understand how an image processing app can be Inkscape compatible. What is it exactly that you are trying to achieve?

Believe it or not, I actually passed spelling in school!
The programs (see...I'm a quick learner, too!) allowed you to edit scanned images then open them in Inkscape and convert them to svg's. The one I was really interested in was supposed to work best with black and white drawings. I do a lot of crafts and have a ton of hand-drawn stuff I want to put on the computer to clean them up, even things out, etc, and this would be faster (I think) than what I do now, which is either:
scan it in, import it, trace a bitmap and then edit from there
or
scan it in, import it, lock the layer and then redraw the design in subsequent layers by following the lines in the locked layer.
I usually redraw it because the bitmap has tons of nodes, even after optimizing paths. I don't use the "Simplify" command much as it has a tendency to distort things a bit too much for my liking.
I've have checked everywhere I can think of to find this info and I just can't locate it. Any ideas?

I don't think I ever heard of them, sorry. But Inkscape has a number of useful bitmap filters like despeckling that might be of use for you.
