What is this handle on my text box?

I've been using Inkscape for a lot of years and I have never seen this before.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

Looks like a gradient to me. If you set the fill back to solid color, does it go away?
Can you share the file?

It seems I can do the same thing (manipulate the gradient handles) with the text tool, so that's a likely scenario.

One can set that many tools' settings - whether a tool can be used to manipulate gradients or not.
Something doesn't work? - Keeping an eye on the status bar can save you a lot of time!
