extension dialogs become inactive after short while - why?

Postby brynn » Mon Jun 06, 2011 10:05 am

Hi Friends,
This is a rather insignificant thing, but it annoys me to no end. I'm not sure if it would be considered a bug, or maybe there's some reason for it. And if so, I would really be interested to know what it is. But literally no other dialogs behave like this, none that I've ever used. So why on the extension dialogs?

Whenever I use an extension (and this has happened with every extension I've ever used) and I've had the dialog open for I would estimate 5 minutes (I've never specifically timed it) it becomes inactive. It won't work any more. I have to close it and reopen it.

I was just using the Interpolate extension, and needed to do some trial and error, getting the right number and width of segments. So I'm working along, set x number of steps, then live preview, do some math, change number of steps again, live preview, change width of end segments, live preview, experiment with Exponent, live preview doesn't work, Apply doesn't work. Once I close and reopen, I'm back in business, for roughly another 5 minutes.

I can't think of any reason for this being by design, but perhaps it is an unfortunate consequence of something?? Does anyone else experience this?

I'm on Windows 7, 64-bit, Inkscape 0.48. But it also happened to me with Windows XP all SPs, and ever since I've used Inkscape, starting with version 0.44.

Thanks for any comments :D

I'm using:

Windows XP Home Edition, SP3 (32-bit)
Inkscape 0.48.1-2 (32-bit).

I've opened a fresh installation of Inkscape, pleased to see it working perfectly.

I've written out "This is some sample text"

The time is 12:24 AM.

I'm opening up Extensions > Text > Replace Text...

I'm going to leave the program alone now for a few minutes. Approximately 10 minutes.

I'll report back with my findings... and a slice of bread. Mmmm, bread.

So I'm back... with a piece of home-made bread and some Tahini. Mmmm.

I haven't touched my Inkscape and the time on my PC sayyyyyssss.... 12:34 AM

Okay, now I'm going to Alt-Tab my way to Inkscape and see what my extension is doing.

Hmm. I can't reproduce the error.

I replaced the word Some with All and it worked perfectly.

Would you kindly run a test for me? Open a document, open an extension and time it (5 min? 10 min?) and make sure the extension dialog is good and dead.

Then upload your document (I'd like to test it on something you've made, it can be as simple as a series of random shapes) so I can test it here.

Thanks :)

Not sure if this is even remotely related but I will give this a shot.
I find that Inkscape seems to just stop at odd times. I can click this or that and nothing - unless I restart the program.
I finally intuitively realized that I needed to click or move the bottom/horizontal scroll bar - it was like it was calling out to be clicked or some essential part of the program was inactive/unselected.
Now there is no reason I know of to have to click or move that (other than normal scrolling) but doing so unfreezes inkscape.

Oh gosh Bob, I don't know how I missed your reply here. Only VB's reply bumped it, is how I now see it. I'm really sorry.
I'll set up a test file shortly.

VB, there is some kind of bug where you have to move a node slightly, to trick Inkscape into redrawing the display...I'm not going to look it up, because it's probably not related. But your description reminds me of that. I've never experienced what you describe. But the next time Inkscape seems to hang, for a non-resource-related reason, I will definitely try that! Hhhmmm, I'll also try it when my extensions stop working -- what the heck, there couldn't be a simpler test, right?

EDIT
Well now I can't seem to reproduce it either! Since that original posting, I've upgraded to 0.48.1. So maybe the problem has been fixed? If it happens again, I will post a new reply with an attached test file.
