Greetings!
My problem is unique and I did not find anything (so far) on the board that might solve it.
I created a pattern by using "trace bitmap" with various complex shapes and then combining them together. I'm not unhappy with my result but Inkscape works very slowly now if I try to use the patten. I assume there's some way to make my pattern/combination of shapes less of a burden on the program.
I tried simplifying it--and that seemed to help--but it's still not easy to work with.
Is there some way for me to keep the colors/detail of my design and still be less taxing on the program?
Thank you for your help and consideration of my problem.

I created a pattern (a strange way) and inkscape hangs...

screenshot ? what is the size of your file ?
Re: I created a pattern (a strange way) and inkscape hangs...
...just the background pattern is 18mb.
Not including the rest of the package design.
Thanks!

I converted the background pattern to a PNG for ease of use... Just not sure how that'll work when we have to go to print. Thanks.
Re: I created a pattern (a strange way) and inkscape hangs...
This kind of pattern can become incredibly huge if created by 'trace bitmap', and not choosing the best options / not choosing the best size of original picture.
If you drew it yourself, using the tools Inkscape provides, I would expect that you could get down to a more reasonable number of nodes which your computer could more easily handle. Not sure about using clones (there are a few bugs associated with clones in patterns, I think...)
Or you could use tiled clones, depending on the size of your drawing.

Are you using blurs in the pattern? If so this may be the cause of the lag. Any filter repeated that many times will slow IS to a crawl. Workaround is making a bitmap copy and using that as a pattern object.
Hard to tell without having the file to look at but as a rule 18 mb is large for a vector file

Your mind is what you think it is.

...not using blur or any effect.
Thanks a ton you guys! It's been a lot of years since I was called on to do any graphic design and everything you've said gives me the info I'll need to re-work it for print.
I can resize the BMP and either make it a tile or break it apart after I 'trace' it and only use the most minimal parts to get my end result.
CHEERS!
