After seeing this post: http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=1191, I decided to take a shot at it for fun. Below is my first sketch of an idea. I'm probably going to go with a different font that's a little cleaner, but my main concern is whether the gauges used for the O's seem okay. I wanted to keep the same feel as the text, but it doesn't look quite right. Any suggestions? Open to suggestions about any aspect, not just the gauges (except for resizing it -- just not worth it ). Thx.
PS I'm considering making the gauges look more like these, but I'm afraid it won't match the look of the text. What do you think?

Re: Phoronix Logo Idea
Still accepting tips for the previous effort, but here's another idea that I like a lot better. Still not finished because for some reason I can't figure out how to make the pivot and arm of the gauge indicator look right. Open to suggestions on this as well.http://files.myopera.com/llogg/files/phoronixlogo2.png
Re: Phoronix Logo Idea
I think the depth effet on the font is really nice sork. I think the flatness and shading of your sample guages would go well, but perhaps still with the colours you've used.
Re: Phoronix Logo Idea
Had another idea. Only after trying to apply the highlight did I realize that this design would require much more work to make it perfect. The problem I ran into (and the reason the highlight looks disjointed) is that the path around the outside of the design is simply a curve with a stroke as wide as the text, while the text when converted to path is an outline of the letter shapes. I'd have to trace the outer path with a new path and then I could join that path to the p and x to make a single path with a smooth highlight. Seems like too much work since I now don't even care for the design all that much. Anyway, here it is:

Awesome. thanks. I've never really known what that feature did. Now I do.
And here's what I did after your excellent tip:
Sorry for the size.

Nice work. I really like the 3rd one down on the left.

Re: Phoronix Logo Idea
Thanks guys. Micro, that's my favorite too, unfortunately a lot of the highlight detail gets lost at this size.
Here are a couple more variations on that same theme:

I like the 2nd on in the 2nd column, but the test suite text could do with a tweak. How does it look if you fill with the dark blue and loose the stroke?
Re: Phoronix Logo Idea
I'll give that a try. I think part of the problem with the "test suite" text is that it's clear at the size I made it, but muddled when shrunk to this size. Thanks for checking them out.
Re: Phoronix Logo Idea
probably my most polished version of the above idea sketches, incorporated sim's idea for the test suite text, made the highlight stand out a bit more and cleaned them up with a clip, then used a mask to make the highlights in the foreground stand out from those receding from the viewer.
