Unable to follow instructions for rubber stamp effect - "intersection" doesn't work?

I'm trying to followthis instruction for a rubber stamp effect but it isn't working.

I have the text which I changed from object to path and I have the calligraphy mess on top of it. When I select them both and go Path > Intersection, nothing happens. I move the calligraphy off the top of the text and it's unchanged.

Is the calligraphy mess also turned into paths and are there any groups?

Thanks! I think it was because the text was grouped. When I ungrouped the text pieces from each other it worked.
