[solved] possible bug with a default extension...generate from path

Postby michaelws » Sun Feb 12, 2017 4:57 am

I was doing a tutorial and it was working fine until the directions said to go to Extensions>Generate from Path>Interpolate.

I just installed version 0.92. I am a new user so maybe it was something i did.

The tutorial was to create a display test using the letter A. Basically the goal was to create a rectangle, duplicate it and move the duplicate straight up and then scale the upper part vertically so that it was a thinner version of the original rectangle...and then to generate copies in between the two that gradually changed size from the original to the duplicated thin one on top.

I set the parameters in the Interpolate window and clicked on "live update" but nothing happened (whereas on the tutorial (youtube) the generated rectangles appeared immediately.

So I clicked "Apply" and nothing happened. I clicked again and my entire screen flickered for an instant. I tried to apply again and the same thing happened. So I thought I would save the file and re-open and try again.

When I clicked "Save" a window popped up saying Inkscape had an internal error occur and would have to shut down. It did.

Luckily the file was saved at that last stage. But when trying to do the extension part again it would not respond. So I closed the file and started a new document and only created the two rectangles. The extension would still not work. The internal error did not appear again but i was still not able to move past this point on the tutorial.

I could not find a suitable sub-forum to post a bug, there was one that led me to an Ubuntu page with bugs but I do not use Ubuntu so I am posting this here. Maybe someone could move it to the proper forum and notify me of the change. I have attached a small screen grab of the problem.

My bad. I did not do the "Object to path". I was unable to delete my original post. Sorry. Maybe this will serve to help some other fool like me who misses a crucial step. I realized this by going to the Help>Turtorials>Interpolate/

My sincere apologies for cluttering the forum unnecessarily.

Don't worry about it. Even though this topic became unnecessary for you, it still could be helpful to other users, having a similar problem.

I couldn't tell you how many times this has happened to me. I will think I found a bug, or something isn't working, and I'm writing out my post, with all the details and steps and clicks and sometimes I even prepare test files. And halfway through it all, I found where I was going wrong. It was the process of going over the technique or tutorial by details, one step at a time, when I was able to solve the problem.

It really does happen to me a lot! Sometimes can abe frustrating, but each time my confidence grows a little more. Because after all, I did solve my own problem!

thanks for the reply brynn. Nice for someone to admit they too have these types of experiences. I need to learn more patience when at the beginning of something new, knowing the chances are mostly that errors are due to my own inexperience.

But I am really liking Inkscape.
