how to fit Text onto perspective

Postby hoodleehoo » Sat Jan 23, 2010 11:01 am

This has probably been asked before, but I don't know what to search for. I'm not familiar enough with terminology to know what it's called. So, if there is another thread explaining this, could you direct me there?

I need to place new text onto a picture of a theater marquee. The marquee is at an angle so the left part of it is lower in the frame that the right, but it's also smaller on the left side than the right because of the perspective. I used the text sliding knobs on the text box to rotate it and skew it a bit, but because the left edge of the marqee is further away from the "camera" than the right edge I need to somehow make the text in the same perspective. I hope I describing that okay. I don't know what the terms are. But, how do you do that? Is there an easier way to do this than what I'm doing?

Thanks so much!

You can use the perspective extension for this (Extensions -> Modify Path -> Perspective).

See the Inkscape guide for how to use this. (But the instructions there seem to be slightly wrong - I find that I need to select the quadrilateral second.)

It appears that some amazing effects can be achieved using the extensions. I'm going to explore them now.

Thanks so much! Not sure I know what "extensions" are. I looked under "effects" and found the "modify path" and then "perspective". I assume that's what you are talking about? Of course, as soon as I selected it the program locked up. :-/

That guide says I need "NumPy"? Do I really need to download that? I tried doing that, but when it attempted to install Numpy it said that I didn't have version 2.6 on my computer and that I needed it to install it. So I need 2.6 to install 2.6? That doesn't make sense! lol

Yes, but that menu is called "Extensions" in Inkscape 0.47. You must be using an older version.

Well, that shouldn't happen. What operating system are you using?

That guide says I need "NumPy"?

If you're using Windows, this is already included with Inkscape. At least, it is for Inkscape 0.47. There were various problems with extensions under Windows in Inkscape 0.46, so you might consider upgrading.

I have a problem with this extension, right at the beginning. I create "ABC" text using text tool, then choose Path - Object to path. "Group of 11 objects in layer Layer 1. Click selection to (...)". I have to ungroup the text to single letters to make the object to path operation work. Then the perspective extension is not working anyway. For the purpose I chose a simple rectangle, changed it to path. Then I applied the perspective exactly as per official manual. Nothing happens except that path defining the perspective disappears. So basicly I have two problems. Any suggestions?

Inkscape 0.47 r22583, built Nov 21 2009. I think I use the latest version, don't I?

No, don't ungroup. The perspective effect can work on a group of paths, but it doesn't work on a bunch of separate paths (unless you combine them).

Actually, it's probably best to do Combine directly on the text (which for some reason gives a group of 1, but that's OK).

Then I applied the perspective exactly as per official manual.

As I said above, the manual appears to be wrong: you need to select the quadrilateral second, not first.

Thanks! The manual is indeed wrong with the order of selection!

The only confusing this is after I apply Object to path on a text the status bar turns from Text to Group of x objects. I expected it to indicate Path.

Yes, that's a bit odd, and is a change from 0.46. A group of paths (one for each character) might be useful in some cases, but this behaviour doesn't fit with the name of the operation.

Hello everybody,
I'm trying, like the first contributor to fit text onto perspective. I did as I found on the web. Write my text with the text tool, set color, font and size. With the text selected : Path menu => object to path. First thing that go wrong : when I select the node tool, no node is selected (though on the web, it is said that I should see all the nodes selected...). I then select the bezier curve tool and draw a quadrangle. Maintaining the shift key pressed, I select my text, then go to the extensions menu => path modifications => perspective. Then an error message window pops up and tell me that the second objet is a group, not a path... If I ungroup my text, then select my quadrangle, then select my text by clic-and-slide, nothing change on my text. It stays just as it was before.
Excuse-me if my english's not good, I'm French ;) I hope you will understand what I mean (I understand more than I can write..)

I'll try to select the quadrangle before the text to see if it would work...
Thanks :)

So, it's OK, to fit text into perspective, first select the text, then the quadrangle then go to the extensions menu => path modification => perspective and it'll work (with the 0.47 version at least...) thank you :)
