Cannot add to previous text?

Postby Ged » Mon Feb 01, 2016 7:14 pm

I produced an svg image several months back and now I want to add to it. So I ungrouped the various graphics and made my changes, but now I want to expand the words in my text box. No such luck. I can only create a new text box, but I dont want that; I want to add to the old text box.

Probably just a little glitch, but Im new at Inkscape. Any suggestions please?

Hi.

By "text box" I assume you have made a flowed text.
Unflow it maybe?

Well, I selected one line and clicked 'unflow' but nothing happened. I cannot get the cursor inbetween the letters. The cursor only wants to create a new text box. Very annoying.

Then maybe it isn't a text object? Or on a locked layer? Who knows, just guessing.

If you can share the file in question we can answer spot on.

When you say "ungroup" is this meant to be the text? If so it´s most likely you converted your text to paths already as this procedure ends in a group. If so - there´s no "undo" in this case and the editable text is no longer available.

Select the object, then look at the status line to see what kind of thing it is. What does the status line say?

"Group of 128 objects in layer" Incidentally, there are 128 letters. Does this mean that the text has become graphic and cannot become text again?

Most probably, yes. If the text has been imported from a pdf file, it sometimes happens that each letter is a single text block - and that could be reversible.

Double-click on the group to enter it, then select a single letter to see if it says 'Path' in the status line - then it's not reversible (but it won't be too much work to type a 128 letter text again, I think?)

If it says 'Text' for the single letter, then you can try to glue them all back together using "Extensions -> Text -> Merge..." when you have them all selected.
