Hi I just installed Inkscape, and am new to vector/graphics software.

After reading the Tutorial, I made a Crescent shape by creating 2 Circles using the while holding Ctrl, with one bigger than the other, and overlapping them, grouping the 2 shapes, and using the Difference boolean operation Ctrl +- . So I've created the crescent, but I want to 'align' the 'tips' of the crescent along a 45 degree straight line - I can use the , and Rotate the crescent, and try to make it aligned but it doesn't seem to be a very 'exact' way of doing it.

I dont really know the proper way to post an image here, so I apologise if putting the link above is not the correct way. Please let me know.

I can think of 2 easy ways to get the “points” of the crescent on a 45 degree angle.

1) After selecting and aligning both ellipses vertically and horizontally, select the top ellipse and while holding the Ctrl key, slide the top ellipse horizontally to give the shape you desire. Do your difference. Now with 2 clicks to give you the rotate handles, hold the Ctrl key while rotating.

The third “snap” of the rotation with be at a 45 degree angle, as long as you didn’t change the “Rotation snaps every” in the Steps dialog of Inkscape preferences, which the default is 15 degrees.

2) Slightly harder... After selecting and aligning both ellipses vertically and horizontally, select the top ellipse and using the arrow keys, move it an equal number of steps down and to the right. Do your difference.

You could try


Go to View and Turn on Grid
go to Document Propeties> Grids > Select Axononmetric Grid from drop down menu and Press New, enter the desired angle in Angle X and Z boxes

(you can disable the rectangular grid if required on the rectangular grid tab by unchecking the Enable box)

You should then be able to use these grid lines, snapping and rotation functions to get the desired result you require.

This is how I'd do it.

Make the two circles.

Select one and do object > align and distribute.

This will bring up a box.
Tell it to align to page. Then click the third icon on both the top and bottom rows. This will move your circle to the centre of the page.
Now do the same with the other circle.
This will align the centre of both circles, one on top of the other.

Now, select the top circle, hold down alt and use the arrow keys to shift the top circle sideways till you see the crescent you want. Just use the left or right arrows as the up and down ones will spoil the vertical alignment.

Now select both circles and do path > difference.

This should leave a crescent with vertically aligned points that can be moved where ever you want it.

I have to say that there is probably a better way of aligning the two circles in the first place. But I always do align to page as I haven't figured anything else out yet.
