Re: breaking apart an object and ungrouping it?
i broke the path
then closed them making 2 seperate objects
here are the 2 objects after they have bee seperated from eachother
so thats it rite? wrong.
they are indeed 2 seperate objects now but they are still grouped and cannot be ungrouped. any help would be great. im just trying to seperate them. thanks

You`re just a step away from a desired result - do the Break Apart.
Since you need a portion of an existing object (complex one I`ll add, since you have some hollow portions in it) perhaps you could go trough the Path drop menu - Intersection, Exclusion, Division...
In this case I`d use Intersection
- duplicate the original shape
- draw a rectangle or a new shape over the part which you would like to separate
- select the larger shape and the rectangle/new shape
- Ctrl+*
- Et voilà!

As you already made that cut,
you could also try to
duplicate (Ctrl+D),
lower opacity,
break apart (Ctrl+Shift+K)
deselect parts of the shape you want to have,
delete other shapes,
select the parts you want the smaller path to have
and combine together (Ctrl+K);
then delete unnecessary nodes from the original path.

Re: breaking apart an object and ungrouping it?
i tried the breakapart option before i posted because i thought that was it for sure but when i do that it also breaks apart the rest of the larger portion of the vector object causing all the parts that are negitave space to fill in and i have to do more steps to get it back to normal. if i have to do it that way then i can but i just thought there may be a shorter answer. oh well ill just have to take my time

Have you tried Intersection?
