At first glance I thought "you can't be serious", but then realized that good user experience (UX) would dictate just so. Gimp and other kin do like you say. There's still things not working quite like they should in the undo functionality in Inkscape. It would probably require a good bit of dev time to fix it properly so it works in a truly well regimented fashion.

Unfortunately, it can't be done. If you can elaborate about the specific situation on the canvas (included screenshot, if necessary), we might be able to offer a "workaround". I can't think of a reason why one would need the deleted object to become selected after undoing the delete. Are you deleting it with the intention of undoing the deletion. Maybe something like Copy could be used. But I don't really understand what you might be doing.

Actually I think I might find that annoying. Of course deselection is just a simple click. But I don't necessarily want or need the undone deleted object selected. Although I do realize the people have all kinds of different needs and preferences :D

Something like an "object manager" as well as many various features regarding selection have been much requested. With an object manager, you would be able to find the object in a list, and click on that, causing the object on canvas to be selected. It would be immenantly (sp?) helpful in complex drawings where an object might be buried under 6 or 8 objects, or a really tiny object, or any situation where selection is tricky. Anyway, I'm sure the devs will work it out, as soon as they can :D

Set both fill and stroke to none. You'll get a see through bounding box.
