I have spent a lot of time trying to get a "working" setup of inkscape on my leopard mac. For those who are interested, here is a summary.
I installed the leopard .dmg and was up and running, but there were problems. Digging deeply, I found I needed to get additional packages which I did not have. I used macports to install a number of packages, but never got render -> latex formulas to appear. I have no idea whether the "official" mac version will ever be "complete" without having to use something like fink of macports, but it is a mighty waste of time to figure all this out as it is (and as I said, I never got render -> latex to work).
So, I uninstalled and turned to macports (which I had never previously installed, and still wish I had not had to do so.) This was another (even more involved due to errors running port install and incompatibilities among packages, not to mention tons of software was installed) basket of snakes, but I now have a "working" setup, including render -> latex capability. Note that this is the linux version, which means none of the niceties that were put into the "official" mac version are included.
And so it goes.
