Inkscape not saving file correctly

Postby jnb41578 » Tue Jul 19, 2011 1:27 am

Hi. New here, I have been trying to save .SVG files from inkscape. I save the file, but when I go to open it, the file type says "FILE" and cannot be opened.(This happens when saving the file in ANY file type.) I am running Windows 7. If you know of any fixes, thanks for the help!

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

I'm sorry you're having this trouble. I'm not sure if it's an Inkscape problem, but hopefully we can figure it out, and at least point you in the right direction.

I always like to be really clear about things. So instead of drawing1.svg, it would say drawing1.file?
When you go to save it, are you using File menu > Save As? Also, in some cases (which I can't explain why) it's important to not only type ".svg" (without quotation marks) after your file name, but sometimes you have to be sure to choose Inkscape SVG (*.svg) from the dropdown menu. That's the default for the dropdown menu, so you might not have to click it, but make sure it's there. I know in the past, at least on Windows, I haven't always had to type the .format when saving something, but in Inkscape, it's important.

If you're already doing that....hhhmm, I'm not sure. Could you be saving it in a folder that doesn't accept the SVG format? I seem to recall seeing an error message years ago, that said I couldn't save an image file in the folder (where I was trying to save it). I guess it was for text only. It was way before I had Inkscape though. Other than that, I'm really drawing a blank. Maybe someone else will have an idea?
