I've been using Inscape for about 5 years now - and rely quite heavily on "outline view" to see what's going on... you kindof need it for laser-cutting etc.
... today "outline view" has stopped displaying anything except fonts.
I can draw a box for example... select it. It's there - but it doesn't display an outline. Similar effect to what you'd get if it was showing white on white
I've tried removing inkscape, deleting preferences, rebooting then reinstalling... still only shows fonts... and it shows the font as a solid block - I'm pretty sure it was showing the font as an outline before this.
I'm running ubuntu 12.04
Inkscape 0.48.3.1 r9886
Any ideas?
Nick
Outline View suddenly only displays fonts
Re: Outline View suddenly only displays fonts
I think it might be this actually https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1074612
Is there a PPA that I can download for this fix? ... what do I do from here?
Nick
(ps: it wasn't showing fonts as outlines before - just tested on another computer etc)

Re: Outline View suddenly only displays fonts

Welcome Nick!
Hhmmm, interesting! Well, just by reading the report, one might interpret that it specifies getting outline view via key shortcut. I wonder if using the View menu > Display Mode route produces the same problem? Or maybe that's just me.
The last comment posted to the bug report indicates that it might be fixed. Maybe you could try version 0.48.4?

Re: Outline View suddenly only displays fonts
Hiya - thanks for getting back to me.
I already was using the menu to change views... neither that nor the keystroke method make any difference.
How do I try version .48.4?
It looks as though Ubuntu is still only installing .48.3.1 https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/inkscape/
I've tried adding
http://ppa.launchpad.net/inkscape.dev/trunk/ubuntu
to my software sources... but the version of inkscape stays steadfastly at .48.3.1 - is there something else I need to download?
(as you may surmise, I'm not 100% fluent with how to actually download/install nightly builds).

Re: Outline View suddenly only displays fonts
I couldn't tell you how to install a dev version. I know you have to compile it, but I don't know how. ....or maybe that's for windows...? But I thought 0.48.4 stable was available for all except Mac. Isn't there something you can use on this page: https://sourceforge.net/projects/inksca ... pe/0.48.4/?

Re: Outline View suddenly only displays fonts
Yea - I tried compiling it... came down with a series of dependency issues... the last one of which proved to be a whole lot harder than the others to resolve...
... and once again found myself doing what I really, really don't like doing, which is spending days scouring the internets for clues, and copying and pasting cryptic commands into a CLI without really knowing what the side-effects might be. There was one occasion last year where I had to rebuild my entire system from scratch - which given how fine-tuned the whole thing is, takes about 3 days.
But I digress.
The files here either seem to be Windows files (.exes) or zips of files that need to be compiled. What I really need is a PPA or something - that will install onto linux.
Unfortunately, the only PPA that appears to be available for Linux seems to be .48.3.1 http://inkscape.org/download

Re: Outline View suddenly only displays fonts
Best give me the 3 liner commands then
- because I can't find a .48.4 PPA anywhere.
Remastersys sounds like a good idea - thanks for that.

Re: Outline View suddenly only displays fonts
Hi nickwit
Go back and
Visit this page, and then choose the ppa for your distro/version from the drop-down list and install it.
https://launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/+archive/stable (or activate it in your software sources if you still have it there.)
The new inkscape version will be listed as Inkscape-trunk in your package manager, once thats done.
Just install the Inkscape-trunk version, and you'll have the latest build of 0.48.4
( note, some extensions may be confused by the new name "Inkscape-trunk" and you'll have to add them
back to Inkscape manually. I had to do that with Sozi but it's working fine now.)
Chances are your first attempt to add the ppa succeeded, but you just didnt realize you needed to look for
Inkscape-trunk when you tried to find the new version of Inkscape to install it.
Dont ask me why the package name has been changed, I don't know.
Edit:
Apt will tell you its going to uninstall Inkscape when you install the new package, but dont worry..
its just the package name issue confusing things again. Go ahead with the install of Inkscape-trunk.

Re: Outline View suddenly only displays fonts
Woohoo!!!!
inkscape-trunk was the key. Isn't displayed in Software-Center; is displayed in Synaptic.
Fantastic - thanks for your help. You're a star.
