Hi,
Been working on this cave map for three weeks, I'm done with the plan and just started with my map profile. Until a series of unannounced brownouts happened. After reopening the file, I got prompted by this error message "Failed to load the requested file C:\Users\LGU\Desktop\Angel Cave_24x36.svg". Can anyone help me with this? I'm using inkscape 0.48. TIA!
Can't open svg file.
Re: Can't open svg file.
Hi.
Most likely your file got corrupted because the program got shut down before saving the complete file.
Check in a notepad if the </svg> tag is present at the end of the codes of the drawing.
If not, then a part is definitely chopped offand some data are lost -objects in the bottom of the z-ordering.
If you share the file we can try investigating and fixing it to some extent.

For next time, be sure to activate Autosave. It's the first thing I do after opening a newly installed Inkscape version.
Find it at Edit -> Preferences -> Input/Output -> Autosave.

Re: Can't open svg file.
This is a little off topic, but I've never used autosave, because I assume it wouldn't take very long to end up with lots and lots and lots, many, many MBs of backed up files. I prefer to make it part of my workflow to save often - every few clicks (or sometimes every click, in a huge file). But since I've seen it recommended more often lately, I wonder if that might be an incorrect assumption.
Does a newly autosaved file overwrite the last one? Otherwise, how do people manage all the backup files? Do you put the backups in a folder that gets regularly purged? It seems like using autosave is either going to eat up your hard drive, or require a lot of file manager maintenance later.

You can set a limit to the number of files that are created.

Plus it's a rolling save... it throws out the oldest when it makes another. You can set how often and how many saves to keep.
Autosaves at about the 14sec mark, note the status bar and the file timestamp updates.
Autosave set for 1 min interval, three saves max.

Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Re: Can't open svg file.
Yes, I saw the settings in Inks Prefs, but if it's as td says, the text for the settings needs to be clarified. The way it sounds, when you reach the number of saves to make, what does it do, just stop saving ? When I first looked at them (since the feature was introduces a couple three versions ago, which was just when I posted the last message), I was thinking, well, how do I predict how long I'm going to work on a file? And I was also wondering if this should be a per doc setting.
With the features td reports, that makes it a much more usable feature! It hasn't always had those, as far as I recall. When autosave first was introduced, I clearly remember a warning about how many docs can potentially be created. That would have been a feature worth touting, whatever version those limitations were introduced!
