Is it possible to sculpt node handles? I know you can sculpt nodes by using the Alt key and dragging the nodes, but it doesn't seem to apply to the node handles. Is this expected, or am I doing something wrong?

I didn't know about selecting multiple nodes and hold Alt to "sculpt" them.

Probably the closest equivelent to the effect applied to handles is to grab the path and move it. This will move the handles and not the nodes, but it only effects adjacent node-handles.
